Apparently so. Some owners are having problems with their new consoles. Read more HERE. There are screenshots and videos, but apparently the video bandwidth is slammed so I couldn't watch them. It's not entirely surprising, most hardware launches experience similar problems.

There's a poll up on one of the xbox forums...

http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=392599

15% crashing... that's not very good.

Granted it's a small sample of people, but still, that's a lot.

http://files.360updates.qj.net/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,33,83

PGR crashing during the race.

I remember people complaining about the psp when < 1% were having [] button issues.

At least it still played games.

And those that are going to come to the defense and say that the PS2 had issues as well. OK that's true, but most issues weren't reported until quite a bit of use or by someone that didn't take care of the system. Took mine over 4 years to have an issue. There were very few "out of the box" deaths of the PS2. The disc read erorr was a 1st gen thing and Sony fixed them for free.

I just heard about this. So far, the Gamestop I work at only had one return on a core unit. As for my system...it works just fine.

Still, on the safe side, I will be getting the service plan for it from MS. Seems like a smart thing to do since I wouldn't be doing anything to it to void the warrenty.

Though to be fair, our demo unit at the store doesn't work. But that is not fault of MS really. That is more of the fault of the god damn kid who thought pounding on the reset button so much at a fair amount of force so that it would short out was good idea.

Mine was a 1st gen, and I just started experiencing the DRE less than a year ago.. Unfortunately, I couldn't get Sony to fix it for free, as they said that they weren't doing that anymore, but they replaced my console with a factory refurbished one for $45, which was fine by me. It runs great and I couldn't be happier.

Around 15% of 360's showing problems IS a problem. But then again, I'm sort of a little amused because people made such a big deal about this thing, paid lots of money, and yet a significant percentage of them are crapping out. I still won't get one and this just further makes me not want one.

Yeah ... althou I don't remember causing any Dreamcasts, Saturns, Playstations, SNES, Genesis, NES or Atari 2600 to short circuit from such abusive behavior (hell I even played football with my genesis + 32x, it has shoe marks on it ... ah the good ol days back when I was a bored pre-teen... and stupid) O well, we're in an era of awesome, breathtaking, totally worth it next generation High-Tech consoles, seems things like that are starting to not even be a surprise. Makes me wonder ... so the ''high'' in ''high-tech'', does it stand for ''highly unstable'' ''highly fragile'' and ''highly unreliable''? Cause such ''high'' technology seem to be fitting to define today's technology (side note: don't drop your iPods on the floor, hard drives are ... fragile, and expencive).

Rolling Eyes

Don't mind me! I'm starting to rant like an old fart, too old for his time, losing touch with all these ''in'' things, not to mention that I like to pick on next gen consoles, I mean come on, not that I have to try too hard, -> * history repeats itself? Or maybe it's just me ... or both! Nuts

I was actually thinking of trying to find one in a few weeks. Now, I'm not so sure.. I might hold off a little longer until they get a handle on this problem. I usually have good luck with consoles reliability-wise, but for $400, I'm not looking to take chances.

This is why I ALWAYS wait to buy a system.
1> wait for them to fix most of the little things
2> wait so that the price is dropped or until the refurbished ones are on the shelves.

The same thing happened to our Gamecube unit back in June. Plus, some kids broke the bongos broke off too. Not to mention a controller on the Xbox unit too. But the reset buttons that broke were not on the actual systems. They are on the case. They are there for the unit to be reset if the system creashes while in demo....or just kids to hit cause they like buttons.

I tell ya, kids here are savage. That is why we rarely turn on our demo units anymore.

My husband used to work for a game/movie/book store. The demo systems for the Xbox and the PS2 quit working after 2 years. The Gamecube is still functional to this day. Either that says something about the hardiness of the gamecube =D Or about its lack of popularity. XD I'm an optimist, so I'm going to believe that the Gamecube is one hardy little machine! =D
