A Harsh Intro Into Night Hiking

Last night from 12:00 AM to 4:15 AM if you looked in the mountains to the East of a little town called Calanda in the province of Teruel, Spain, you'd see little ole' me with a group of hikers (including my mother) on mountain trails, hiking a total of 24 km(about 15 miles).

Yes, we are crazy, and we were going at quite a fast pace too (my group of four, including myself, finished an hour ahead of average time). There were a total of three rest stops along the way, and we spent about 3-5 minutes at each, refueling on provided candy, nuts, bread, and water. The trail was really through the mountains, sometimes so narrow and precarious a mountain goat would have trouble, and at other times we'd be going along an old tractor road that snaked through the mountains.

Most of the time the moon just lighted our way, a little stubbed toe here and there wasn't gonna stop us. Other times we -had- to use a flashlight, for fear of tripping and falling off of a cliff to our, well, misfortune. The trail could be relatively easy to recognize most of the time (markers had been set up on tricky parts), and we had a veteran of this hike with us, who liked the pace we were going at.

There were two different lengths of that hike; a shorter one, 16 km, and a longer one that branched off the shorter and went up to an old monestary in the mountains, 24 km. There were maybe a total of 60 people hiking this, but most took the shorter route and everyone was well spread out into little groups after the first 7 km.

Lets just say this was quite an experience, without regard to my bruised toes and sore joints (I actually don't feel all that sore), and next time I'm bringing my hiking pole.

I've never been hiking myself.
Definitly sounds like a challenge but I suppose it's very rewarding as well.

aka, you gotta go to scotland and go highland hiking. I like hiking, but this is sadistic stuff.

I remember when i hiked into west point, and how we were hiking in the dark: twas quite trecharous...you should really hike during the day, for fear of falling and spraining an ankle, or worse.

But yea, next time, you gotta hike conmingo chica!

Awww night hikeing is the best lol, last time I did it I ended up having to climb a 25 foot bluff to continue on the train though lol. still extriemly excelent

I hike during the day often, but night hiking is a different story. ^^
