I've been trying to get onto xbox live by using the ethernet cable that came with the modem. this isn't the problem as the xbox says the cable connections fine, and the IP thing is fine, but it cant do the DNS for some reason, I've put this in:
Primary DNS: 194.168.4.100
Alternate DNS: 194.168.8.100
I'm with NTL.
anyways, it says this when i tried to connect:
"The DNS Servers could not be reached. Check these possible options:
- If your Xbox console is connected directly to your modem, verify the DNS servers settings match the settings provided by your ISP."
now ive put "winipcfg" into the Run option on my start bar and brough up all my internet details (im on windows me) and the DNS numbers match. so I dont understand whats going on.
I'm not technical minded at all so i you could keep any help to "normal english" as in XBox Live for Dummies stylee. and all help will be greatly appreciated |

try setting your DNS to automatic. |

how is your box connected to the internet? box>router>modem or box>modem?
if its the former, set both your IS addy and DNS to automatic and your PPPoE to off, and if its the latter then turn your PPPoE on and set it up to log in just like you have it on your comp.
if that dosent work, turn off your modem (and router) for a few mins, then try again. And if that dosent work, then call your ISP to see if they are having problems. if they arent, ask somone else cuz im clueless after that. |

so what is the PPPoE thing? thats the only thing i havent found information on |

point to point protocol over ethernet. it connects computers together. when you log in to the internet you type a username and password into a window right? well if your xbox in connected directly to your modem, you need to tell it what your username and password are, so it can log in. so go to the PPPoE part of network settings and fill it in. that should work |
