I'm in graduate school for education. I thought that I wanted to teach elementary school children. So, after graduating from college I went straight to graduate school. I even took some graduate classes while I was in college to have a head start and for what....NOTHING! I HATE teaching. I'm in a 4th grade right now and my cooperating teacher is just so awful! She can't give up her power and therefore won't let me do anything!!! Student teaching is about doing stuff and getting wonderful advice and things of that nature. What am I gettting??? Pooped on!!!
Moral of the rant is I don't know if I want to teach now. Maybe I'm wasting tons of time and money for nothing! Maybe I should find a job somewhere else or something!!! I'm sooo confused and I can't stand going to school any more!!
I hate my life right now!!!!!!

It sounds like you should speak to someone about the actions of your fellow teacher. I've heard you say so much how you wanted to teach, and it would be a shame if that was the reason you wanted to stop. The kids sound great, and the atmosphere seemed well enough.

Yeah, the teacher you're working with is screwing you. You should prolly say something to your head about it. It's not really helping you to just sit there. You need to get a handle of how they roll in 4th grade, so then you can be prepared to make p a lesson plan and such. Plus I'm not really sure how it is for elementary school, but if you do High School, They give you like half a semester to actually teach the class by yourself. If it is that way, your teacher isn't really doing his/her job that well and you need to say something about it.

Nogrick, I HIGHLY agree with you!! It's my fourth week into school and she doesn't do anything with me! I'm so frustrated by the whole process. I am suppose to be teaching some what, but I feel like that's never going to happen with this crazy psycho teacher!

I have to talk to my advisor tomorrow. Hopefully something good will come of it..

I would try and get a new teacher to work with. I agree with Girkon, that would be a very bad reason to stop. I want to be a computer programmer, either for games or just programming, and I have heard some bad things about them, but I am not going to let that stop me. Very Happy

i must agree with this. If the person doesn't want to let you do it, then you gotta take the bull by the horns and show em that you not only want to, but need to gain the experience of teaching, since it will help fashion the skills that you need. If she has a problem with that, go and find a new person. Simple as that. Im sure the school will much rather do that then just say "Here's the door"

You already know my take on this whole situation. So you ended up in a sorta-bad situation. That happens from time to time, and you can't let it discourage you. Kisin is absolutely right, one bad apple can't spoil the bunch, and from what you've told me before, this teacher isn't THAT bad.

You can't let something like this discourage you from finishing what you are SO close to finishing. Like I said to you before, it would be like getting close to the finish line and then turning around and giving up. You've worked so hard and come so far, you might as well finish. And if you decide later on that teaching isn't what you want to do, at least you have a good degree to fall back on, which is better than not having one at all.

Ok so yes, I think I may have overreacted a little the other day, but it was good to get it all out.
Yesterday was a great day! She let me do my DOL checking without interruptions and she let me teach a lesson on bar graphs! It's much better now!!

My mother recently became a teacher - she passed her university degree and has done her first year as a teach - and she loves it. It wasn't easy for her, our family know how hard it is to train and get the experience - beause we'v seen my mother go through the steps. Sadly, there are going to be teachers in your placement that are going to be a little crappy to you - Some just don't get that you are there to learn from them and are enthusiastic and helpful, because in a way - even though you are practicing handling the kids, you are also another of their pupils too and its very umproffessional of them to treat you like you are not there.

Very glad that's all worked out for you - the job has its ups and downs like any job and my mum loves every minute of it Very Happy
