I live in a major city. I use the Max (a lightrail train, kind of like a subway or an ellway, except on street level) to commute back and forth to work. The day before yesterday, I was late to work because the police were using one of the train stops to stop every train, scour it, and inspect it. At first, I thought "are they looking for somebody?" and it turns out, no, they were looking for bombs. Appearantly, terrorists of some sort had hinted that they were going to blow up trains in a major US city, like what happened in London.
Now, don't get me wrong--I'm happy that they aren't just standing by and letting stupid people blow up trains. I'm glad that they took the time to inspect the trains and keep us safe. That isn't the problem here.
The problem is that the US Goverment took this as an oppertunity to tell the City of Portland that it needs to disable Fareless Square. Fareless Square is an area on the map where all train, bus, and streetcar rides are free. The government said that Fareless Square is "a terrorist threat" and it needs to be removed to keep Portlanders safe.
....Okay, look, I use Fareless Square every day to go back and forth to work, to go shopping for clothes or groceries, and I'm sure it's the same for thousands upon thousands of other Portlanders. Not only is it convenient because it's free, and it accesses several shopping districts, but it helps Portland's economy. If it's free to ride back and forth between shops, then you're more likely to go to more shops and spend more money, right? That's exactly what the City of Portland had in mind. Not to mention, Portland isn't exactly a hub of terrorist activity. In fact, it's one of the cleanest, friendliest cities in the world; I can't see anybody wanting to blow it up anytime soon.
Also, if we take away something as unique and fantastic as Fareless Square because of some imaginary terrorists, aren't we giving in to the terrorism? |

If this is the case, you should rally with other people who feel the same and present your case to either your governer or congressman. It may not seem like it, but when people with a similar voice speak out, they can indeed be heard. |

What the hell? I can understand that they are trying to avoid what happened in London, but the difference is - London did not stop the underground or Bus services afterwards. They cleaned up, we all mourned, we keep as safe as we can, and security has gone up - AND It's still in use today. We are not going to be scared into hiding, that is rediculous.
Like Girkon suggest, start up a potition or something, I'm sure there are a lot of other peoples that feel the same way. |

The only truly safe place is one where all the inhabitants are dead. While I can see the rationale behind wanting to restrict a way for evil persons to move about, if the greater plublic good is served by keeping it open, then it should stay open. |

That is an awesome idea. I will keep watch to make sure that they don't actually go into moves to remove Fareless Square, although I just did a little bit of research into it and found Trimet's policy regarding removing or extending fareless zones, and one of the reasons why the zone is there in the first place is so that the city can maintain its goals of air quality (and seriously, Portland has some of the cleanest air of any major city, certainly the cleanest of any city I've ever been to) and the compliancy of downtown parking and traffic circulation, so I honestly don't think that the City of Portland is going to go for having it removed.
If it looks like they're going to remove it, though, I'll either start a petition or find one and join in.

Exactly. We can't let public services ground to a halt because of something like this, that would be giving the terrorists what they want.

That's a very good point, although I think what they're worried about it someone getting on at one of the fareless stops, setting up a bomb, then getting off at the next stop. I think that they think that because it's free, that somehow makes it easier or more likely to happen, but in my opinion, it would be just as easy on a train where you had to pay for fare, the terrorists would just be out a couple of bucks. ~_~''
Stupid terrorists. We wouldn't have to worry about any of this if they would just stop. |

*sigh*. So true. There are other ways to achieve goals than terrorism that are more effective. |

Well, terrorists have gotten to us in NYC too. This week there was the same threat here as well. They specifically said that on Sunday, October 9th something will happen in the subway, probably a bomb. Everyone was scared. My cousin who lives in NYC hasn't rode the subway all week long because of it! It is now 10:25pm on Sunday and nothing has happened. EXCEPT that people are living in fear! How dare those stupid terrorists, messing with us like that!! They will get what is coming to them. |

Scrums, I'm sorry you are going through this.
You have every right to complain I believe. Things have just gotten out of hand. The Government is taking things away thinking it's going to help when it in fact only makes things worse.
You hit the nail right on the head. Do they really think that paying a buck or two to get on the train is going to stop them. Yeah right. All you are doing is hurting your citizens. You aren't deterring the treat AT ALL! |

It's a hard, thankless job most of the time.
Police officers are only human, I think it's unfair that so many of us stubbornly refuse to see this. We expect them to be supermen, but they're not. They put their lives on the line every day, and often don't recieve the praise they deserve. All it takes is one bad cop and all of a sudden they're all nazis, they're all fascist pigs. Alot of them are your neighbors, they're just hard working men and women doing their jobs. I don't think it's fair for you to generalize like that.
Or maybe I'm just reading it wrong, what do you mean by them not paying attention to their surroundings?
Also, what weapon permit are you talking about specifically, and what context does that have here?
/tangent
I do agree with Shino,
Ever since 9/11 it seems we've been placed with more restrictions, and at what point does it become excessive and no longer effective? |
