Not sure if you guys have heard the story thats all over british news at the moment. If not here it is
basically a bunch of people submitted themselves for the human testing stage of a drugs test, no problems had reportedly shown up at the time (when they took the drug) in animal testing and human testing was the last stage, something went horribly wrong and within an hour or so the human testers were hospitalised.
what i find irritating though is their families planned to sue, excuse me? they submitted themselves to the testing, no one forced them to do it, no one knew this would happen as its obviously sometihng that doesnt show up in animals, and they more than likely signed an agreement stating that they understood that there may be unknown side effects, yes these are MAJOR side effects but come on, let them take responsibility for their own actions.
also this may send out a message to all the animal rights activists who send death threats out to scientists who take part in animal testing, would you be happy to put your self in the situation these hospitalised people are in? i dont think so somehow, and the majority of drugs tested on animals dont make it through to human testing, its something like 5%.
the annoying things is when you get animal rights activists talking about "their dog suffering because of these people!!!" (yes ive heard people say that in town centres) again excuse me? the animals used in tests have been specially bred for this purpose, no its not right to test anything on an animal, but would you rather more and more people died from drugs that arent safe than animals? again would you be happy to submit yourself for testing? ive asked numerous activists that ive seen in Nottingham town centre when i lived there if they ever did any drugs testing and they normally stated they wouldnt even consider it. talk about hypocrysy. |

Or to quote an oft-loved (or hated, depending) pundit, Bill Maher:
Bill Maher wrote: |
"To those people who say, 'My father is alive because of animal experimentation,' I say, 'Yeah, well, good for you. This dog died so your father could live.' Sorry, but I am just not behind that kind of trade-off."

Of course human testing always has to be the last step of any clinical test cycle (or else we wind up with deployed pharmaceuticals with unknown human effects), but PeTA wants it to be the only live test cycle. To touch on the first point of your post, though - if the pharm company didn't put an indemnity waiver in their contract with the test subjects, they were "asking for" this suit (a sentiment I agree with about as much as saying a provocatively-dressed girl is "asking for" rape). However, I will be interested to find out if there was any deception on the part of the pharmaceutical company regarding the possibility of major adverse effects (they really do deserve to get in trouble if they claimed that they had any idea what effects could happen in human test subjects on a first test run). |

More news is that there were seven subjects, but one was given a fake drug that wouldnt do anything at all to him, and he sat there and witnessed the others clawing at their skin and stuff like that.
Does this point to them knowing thast something really bad could happen? Kind of sounds like it to me, its very suspicious non the less. |

Which part is suspicious? There's always a placebo subject.
EDIT: Also, having such a small number of subjects seems to point to caution on the part of the company - not handing the drug out to statistically-significant numbers of people is usually a sign that the company knows that VBTs couldoccur, not necessarily that they will. |

Ah right, wasnt sure on that front, just going on what the news has reported, and thrye all making a big thing about the fake drug, but if they always do that then its to be expected.
Poor bloke witnessing that though. |

BTW, your original source cites eight subjects, with two being given placebos, and no mention of the hubbub about the placebo peoples. If you've got additional sources, serve 'em up - I'm caffeinated and ready to read. Don't hold out on me, man! :wibble: |
