OK so it's that time of year again... and rather than have 3000 new topics talking about stuff that's going to happen over the next week, I figure we can just have E3 topics. Since there would probably be too much info all over the place for just one topic, we can make one for each major player.

Welcome to the Sony E3 Update Topic.

The press conference for Sony will be happening 5/8 at 4PM Pacific Time.

Updates:
Virtua Fighter 5 PS3 Exclusive

2 different Final Fantasy XIII games coming to PS3?

Square Enix Press Conference Coverage wrote:
2:02 Final announcement! For PS3! E3 is so damn exciting sometimes. What is it?!

FINAL FANTASY XIII. FINAL FANTASY XIII. They pulled a serious bait-and-switch on us. Sword-and-gun-wielding heroine who looks like Yuna, flipping her way around a high-tech, futuristic world. No idea what it was until the end when that NAME popped up. Yoshinori Kitase directing! This is the guy behind all the best ones--VI, VII, VIII, X. Be still my heart.

2:08 Sorry, I jumped the gun--Mr. Kitase was merely presenting. Motomu Toriyama will direct the game. And apparently FFXIII isn't the only game coming out of this universe--there's a, uh, mobile game too. Oh. It's Final Fantasy Agito XIII.

Now it's Fabula Nova Crystallis--"the new tale of the crystal" in Latin. They're big on the Latin today. Whoa, wait, another new game? Another PS3 game?! Final Fantasy Versus XIII? They're emphasizing that in Latin, versus means "to change direction." This is a Tetsuya Nomura game, and he's taking the stage now.

Some amazing stuff going on at the press conference. Watching it live right now.

They actually showed a game where it was like a CCG where you actually put a card in view of your eyetoy and the game registers what card it is and displays the creature on the screen. You can move the card and it will move the creature on the screen. Then you can interact with the creature to make him attack, etc.

This is apparently playable at E3 so I hope to see more of this.

Heavenly Sword looks amazing. It's like God of War with a kick ass hot chick... that's really mean to the men she's killing.

More to come...

I read about the FFXIII thing, They say it's going to be an Action Sequel developed by the Kingdom Hearts team. Not so excited about the eyetoy stuff since that never interested me to begin with but still a neat idea.

PS3 controller...

Looks the same as PS2 but has motion sensitivity built into the controller. Showed a real time demo of Warhawk using this tech. It looks pretty cool... but I can already hear the mocking of them b/c they "copied Nintendo."

However, difference between Nintendo and Sony. Nintendo has sensors that are placed on the screen (I believe). The Sony Controller needs no external Sensor.

But I don't see this controller being use for anything but driving or flying or things similar. Things like Red Steel for the Rev... I don't see stuff like that happening for the PS3.

The price has been revealed...

$499 w/ 20GB Hard Drive
$599 w/ 60GB Hard Drive

I have to say I'm very disappointed with their price point. Especially since they are charging you an extra $100 for 40G more space. You can buy a 60G (2.5 in) for around $100 if not a lot less.

Release Date. 11/17/2006

Supply
2 million at launch.
4 million units by the end of the year.
6 million units by the end of the first quarter 2007

Looks like I'll probably be waiting for a price drop.

So...that's a negatory on PS3 at launch.
Looks like I'm gonna unload on Wii Very Happy

Hopefully we'll get a situation like the PS2 hard drive where we had third party hard drives compatible with the system. At least that's one I read happening.

As far as the controller, they scrapped the Boomerang then? I'm not surprised, I'm not surprised they added motion sensitivity either. They deserve any mocking that they copied Nintendo. I don't really see a way they can justify it any other way.

Not surprised by the price point. Reminds me of the iPod is some sort where you spent $100 more for 2x the memory. I figured it was going to be around $500. I probably won't pick one up due to the major price point.

Whta did suprised however are the two SKUs. After the whole 360 SKU thing negative comments, I am surprised Sony did the same thing.

I'm not so sure about the screen sensors, but I do know that sony's controller still isn't as cool as Nintendo's. (The differences are listed in the article).

Further notes from the last page of the official Sony press release:

  • 20 GB model will not have HDMI. Problem? The Blu-Ray DRM spec will mean that signal from Blu-Ray discs not outputted through HDMI-out will be downgraded to 480p.
  • 20 GB model will not have built-in Wifi.
  • 20 GB model will not have the Memory Stick/SD/CF reader.

Neither of these facts were mentioned at the presser at E3. And since - unlike the 360's Hard Drive - the Wifi, card reader, and HDMI don't appear to just be modules to slap on the console, this may mean that the "Budget" pack is permanently crippled.

Boo Sony. Boo.

EDIT: I didn't see that anyone else mentioned this, but I'm also undercaffeinated. The PS3 controller will not include any rumble feature - they claimed that it "interfered with motion sensing", but it seems more likely that they're getting a little tired of Immersion and their "we deserve money for a patent on a technology we bought out" hissy-fits.

I can count the amount of games that will take advantage of Sony's tilt feature on one hand. I doubt Sony will really do much with it either.

The WII, DS, and GC stuff are pretty much all I'm looking forward too. I will admit the new 360 stuff looks nice though. I probably won't be buying a PS3 for a very long time. When I do it'll probably be a used one. No way in hell am I paying that much for it. I knew it was going to be around $600.

I think Sony really needs a lesson in humility. They seem to think they're untouchable.

Agreed.

I just found out about the press release that Kugyou was talking about before I logged on today.

$600 for a PS3...

Sorry...

Way to go Sony, you just lost me as a launch supporter.
I'll see you when you drop $200 off the $600 beast.

Way to open the door for Microsoft.

In other more important Sony news...

Metal Gear Solid coming to PSP...

Yeah, I thought the "However the vibration function has been removed from the controller, the reason is that vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor." was funny too. Nothing mentioned about the Immersion lawsuit interfering with the sensor. LOL

I'll wait for the $400 price point and the PS3 HD Advance then slap in a 200GB HD or slave it to my PC.
