wow... that's horrible Skylah.

I can't believe the difference in the sky in that picture.

And we complain here about the "smog."

It's NOTHING compared to what you are dealing with.

I hope things get better soon.

Wow skylah, I feel sorry for ya. And I thought the smog in Houston was bad. Thats freakin ridiculous. Who's bright idea was this? They cant clear land with bulldozers and dump trucks? They gotta set it on fire? How does that conversation go?

Dude 1: Hey we need to clear all this land, whats the easiest way to do it?
Dude 2: Well we could respect the surrounding areas and spend a few months clearing it the proper way, with heavy equipment.
Dude 3: F that, lets just set the whole place on fire.
Dude 1: BRILLIANT!! That wont piss anyone off....

I hate people.

Somewhere around here I've got pictures of me in a sandstorm in Baghdad that looks something like that only brown. That's awful though, I'm so sorry you have to deal with that. Is there no kind of environmental protection laws?

As I read, these are more rural farmers with out access to heavy equipment rental depots and if they did have no money to spend on such frivilous equipment. There is obviously no reprecussion from the law and the land needs to be cleared. The law arent going to shut down farmers, they rely on the crop, and they have no money to fine them for.

Its a sad situation but its more of a social and economic condition than a simple matter of finding a new clearing solution. One could even go so far as to argue that theres little wrong with them using a cheap, natural method to clear their lands for farm use and provide a living for themselves.

Like I said, its a situation. Hopefully Malay and Indonesian leaders will find a solution.

I'm with Daijaga on this one, guys. It sucks, but fire really is one of the best ways to clear things, and probably is better for the environment than the diesel-using dumptrucks and crap. Smoke doesn't kill the ozone layer m'dears. At least, not woodsmoke.

Environmental protection laws don't apply to 3rd World countries.

Which is why Bush and even Japan refused to sign the Kyoto treaty (Note Kyoto is in Japan and Japan refused to sign it) The treaty said China and India can burn as much fossil fuels as they want because they are 'Third World" countries.

If anyone has seen China or India you'll notice that they have rural areas that are 3rd world but at the same time they have VERY nice big cities.

I am kinda curious where u got this information.....
Here is a list of the chemicals that come out of wood smoke
http://burningissues.org/bi/table2.htm
Not all of these are bad, but a good number are carcinogens, and some are fatal in large quantities....which I am pretty sure an entire forest on fire would be able to accumulate.
Also combustion engines have nothing to do with the hole in the ozone. But they do put out carbon emissions, which guess what smoldering wood puts out oodles of those.

Not trying to jump all over you Razz
But this kind of burning is dangerous and irresponsible, and it shows a total lack of respect, both to people in neighboring countries and the environment.
