This is something that won't go away. People will always be judged by one another based on appearances. Why? Because it's a quick and easy way to assess another human being, so you don't have to take the time to get to know them, find out you don't get along with them, and have wasted effort.
It will always happen. Whether we're aware of it or not, we judge people. I'll admit openly that I do. I'm much more likely to speak with someone who looks the way I'd imagine a geek to look than one who looks like they're popular. Why? Because I have a stereotypical image of how 'popular' type people behave, and I don't tend to get along with people who behave that way.
Whether you're 'racist' or not, race is factored into this. There are stereotypes. And you know what? There's a reason these stereotypes exist. Yes, there are exceptions to every rule, and a lot of stereotypes get blown out of proportion, but most of them are based at least a little bit in reality. Whether this is because of natural disposition or because of societal demands (which I lean more towards) they still exist. They will always exist.
The only issue we can really address that might change is the political implications of these personal stereotypes, and whether there -ought- to be political implications at all...and...er...political discussions aren't allowed here on the boards. | I know it will always be around, but it's still wrong in my eyes, even though we all do it sometimes. |

But the question of whether the use of labels is wrong is highly subjective, and depends on intent. Identification is much different than judgement. |

I have actually had an argument regarding race with someone at my previous job. His father was treated poorly because he had a darker skintone, and so this guy felt that racism is only against those who are not white. When I told him that everyone is racist (almost broke into song there.... everyone should hear "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist" from Avenue Q), he basically told me I would never understand because I had never been in that situation. Unfortunately for him, I HAVE been in a situation where I was not only the racial minority, but also the minority for other reasons. I was doubly discriminated against, and so know what it is liek to have to do things liek practically run throguh the hallways at school not talking toanyone because you're afraid of offending anyone.
I think it's ridiculous, but I also know it's not going to change. Only time I get worked up about it is when someone of another race from myself accuses me of beign racist, because then I get defensive. |

I don't think there's anything wrong with judging people-- it's functional. I don't think socializing children is necessarily a good thing, though. This is where we gender-ize them, tell them that because your daughter's a girl she can't do karate or play with trucks, but instead should wear pink and play with dolls and become a cheerleader. It's not -just- those things, but I think that moulding people to be a certain way because of their race or their gender is wrong. I should be able to enjoy pirates and transformers just as much as my brother does. Little black boys don't -have- to be tough gangsters, even if that's what society and the media tell them they ought to be. Boys don't have to be strong and not cry and beat up their girlfriends, even though they're told to toughen up when they do cry.
We create our own racist and sexist problems, guys. |

This much is very true, regardless of gender, or race we should be able to enjoy the things want to, if your a girl and want to play karate you can. If your a guy and don't want to be a toughfy you can. If your black and don't want to be a gangster then don't. ^_^ This is the way it's supposed to be.

Alright, I'll see if I can pick up the thread of what's going on here.
So... race. Right. I realize that with inflation two cents ain't worth much, but I'll give it a shot.
The real issue we're dealing with here has everything to do with the idea of DIfferent and nothing to do with the idea of Color. After all, if you start doing the research (and I have, don't remind me) into American history every single ethnic group that immigrated to this country was discriminated against. Irish, Italian, Polish, all the White groups were discriminated against in their time. The "Hispanics" (you're totally right, by the way, Akanari) are the most recent in a long line of groups that have been discriminated against due to mass immigrations into the country.
Now, on top of this we have to realize that, for some unknown reason, people are really territorial and they want to "defend" what is "theirs" from outsiders. The reason that Black people are able to fight for greater privilages is the fact that they have been accepted as members of this society. To the incoming masses of immigrants most of the people in power are just trying to get rid of them or marginalize them into the lowest economic segment in society. Really, 'racism' is just another form of the intense discrimination that plagues our country on a number of levels. It's just also the most visual.
