Don't worry about keeping time until you can jog about 30 - 45 min nonstop since it will throw off your natural rhythm (you are running to match a pace as opposed to forming your own).
Also, another trick is the next day to do a light workout to strech out the muscles you just exercised.
There are also some more advanced tricks you can do, but I don't think you really need to worry about them just yet .
Actually if you want to exercise and have fun, invest in a punching bag. I used to keep a speed & sand bag at the apartment until the neighbors complained =(. |

The only thing with jogging/biking is that I'm afraid to go out and about by myself to do it. I don't have enough self-defense classes in my system to really feel comfortable with it, despite the fact that I'm in a safe neighborhood, and cars worry me too. There's not really anyone for me to do it -with-, either, except on weekends, and then Shino and I are usually so busy we don't really get an opportunity to (or are so tired from being busy that we just don't feel like it)
During the weekdays I live with my parents and siblings, all of whom are usually at work when I'm at home, and most of my friends live at least half an hour from me, which makes it inconvenient on them if I were to ask them to join me.
Annd....I have no money, so buying anything is completely out of the question.
I do what I can, as far as biking a bit around the neighborhood until I feel stupid and stop (or get tired of all the freakin' hills in my subdivision) and stretching and stuff. I really wish I could find my Tai Chi DVD and start that up again, but it seems to have vanished somewhere between my parent's house and Shino's.
So yeah. Once I graduate the situation will be a little different (especially as I'll be able to shop for myself, pay for class instruction, and be closer to people I know) but until then, I'm sort've having to make do with what I've got. |

You sound like you're doing fine with what you have, good for you.
I would also recommend dancing. :] Of any sort. Not classes or anything, just by yourself, put on some music, and bounce around. It's terribly euphoric and fun.
Speaking of sore...I was at Valdosta State University for six weeks this summer and I was on the 4th floor of one of the dorms. I hate elevators, so at least 8 times a day I would dash through 4 flights of stairs. Also, my classes were on the third floor of one of the Halls and so had to run up and down 3 flights of stairs several times a day. The first week my butt and calves were -so- sore, but the legs got used to it and now I just have more glutes, calves, quads, and hamstrings. Which makes my already thick bottom half more muscley.
Oh, squats are wonderful, and good for your whole life. Great for lifting power and I think (after Core muscles) leg muscles are the most important in the body. Especially for females. It's where our strength is! So I'm rambling now...and yeah, I doubt you really need any of this advice, Legend. :] |

A wise man once told me (while biking) that hills build character. I don't think I'll ever forget that little pearl of wisdom as long as I live.
And if you want to increase muscle, I agree that you should try out weights. Just make sure you do research/talk to someone who knows before you do anything to make sure you do what's safe and good for YOU. |

I dunno. I -really- hate weights. I've worked with them a little bit before when we had to in high school, and I can't stand them at all. Maybe when I have access to them again I'll give it another go, but I much prefer the stretching stuff I've been doing, particularly as I'm incredibly inflexible and could use the work on it anyhow (literally, I can't even reach my toes because of my inflexibility). |

Sounds like my old BPE class from High School where we spent most of the week in the classroom, and the rest walking around the track...we had 2 "physical tests" where the idiot teacher didn't bother to really push his point to us that we were supposed to be training up until then, and not spending the class time making just one lap around the track socializing.
It was kind of a wake-up call for him after 2/3 of his class failed the test.
But the whole point to it is to get there gradually. Everyone has their own tollerances and making everyone do a 13-minute treadmill run is ridiculous, not to mention dangerous if they haven't been working up to that point.
I really do need to lose weight, and get into some kind of shape. My obsession over plants and planting at least got me moving and sweating but I've kinda run out of room now until my vegetables die off. I tend to get my exercise by digging holes...One thing all this rain can't help with are rocks and roots, and I've got plenty of those! I tend to get really sore the next day due to what I've decided to call "Shovel-butt" hehe
I might look into weights myself...push-ups work really well for my arms but I just really need to lose pounds and fat...but I'm still working on how to fix that little problem... |

I started seeing a nutritionist about 3 weeks ago, and she really helped me to make positive lifestyle changes, such as cutting nearly all the crap out of my diet and focusing on eating a balanced diet with lots of fiber and making doubly sure to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water per day. So far I've lost 6 pounds in 3 weeks, and that's really without really exercising.
She suggested that I get a pedometer and wear it all the time. The goal is to get to the point where you walk around 10,000 steps per day, which roughy translates to about 4.5-5 miles. Actually, having the pedometer has really been motivating, and it helps for me to try to break my previous days record. |

That's pretty cool. ^^ Since taking this class I've started parking in the furthest parking lot from where I need to be (or at least one that's fairly far away from it, if not the furthest) and walking everywhere I can, though it's only a small change from my usual (I never really took elevators or anything anyhow). And I've started eating a -ton- better (as Shino can vouch for) though, since my metabolism hasn't broken down on me yet (that's for when I hit thirty) I still eat some chocolate and cookies and stuff too. I'm taking baby steps towards a healthier lifestyle, though, that I can maintain, and I think that's more important than cutting out the crap right away in some ways. Especially as I used to exist on junk food alone. |

Its fun to trick yourself into getting exercise too. I like to go out to The Avenue---a long shopping center and just park in one single spot. If I have to walk all the way to shop, then ooops, I guess I tricked myself to just walk there....then I have to go back to the car if I actually buy something...;P |
