Really, I did. I got boored one day and decided that I would make a sword in my free time. I used a piece of scrap metal from humvee armor. Yes folks, this sword is not only shiny, it will also deflect automatic rifle fire!
The blade is made from a solid piece of hardened steel. I used a plasma cutter to cut out the basic shape and an air grinder to grind off all of the paint and work down the edge. I used a metal file to hone the edge and finally a wet-stone for the finish. It is VERY sharp. The guard is aluminum and JB weld. (Keep in mind folks I'm not a professional sword maker and I'm not exactly working with state-of-the-art materials here.) It's full tang. The handle is wood with black duct tape around it and the twist wrap is white cloth. The shiny silvery parts are aluminum tape. (very handy to have around!) The scabbard is also wood. (a huge pain in the neck to carve out the inside of!).
In all it took about 10 days to make. Unfortunately it's not stainless steel so it has a bad habit of rusting. Fortunately a good rubbing of WD-40 keeps the rust monster away!

Which is the most likely scenario given that I'm a horrible shot! However, if the Taliban get close enought to me for me to use a sword something has gone horribly wrong!
Thanks for all the accolades. I worked really hard on it and I just wanted to share it with everyone. Who knows, when I get back to the states I might finally be able to come to an AWA and I'll bring it along. |
