Nintendo says gamers will have 30 downloadable Wii games to choose from by year's end.

While Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are asking gamers to shell out for the next-generation of gaming experiences, all three companies recognize that there are a number of people willing to spend money on previous generations' gaming experiences as well. Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade has been offering retro titles since the system launched last year, and Sony recently detailed its plans to offer original PlayStation games for download on the PlayStation 3.
Nintendo had already announced the Virtual Console and some of its publishing partners, but today the company laid out the first wave of titles, 30 in all, to be available by the end of the year. The games (listed in full below) will come from Nintendo, Sega, and Hudson.
The company also reiterated the starting price points for the games, noting that NES games start at 500 Wii Points ($5), TurboGrafx-16 games at 600 Wii Points ($6), Super NES and Sega Genesis games at 800 Wii Points ($ , and Nintendo 64 games at 1,000 Wii Points ($10). Wii Points will be available online or at retail in packs of 2,000 with a suggested price of $20.

I expected the prices to be slightly less seeing as they're selling games they dont have to develop or manufacture -_-. Still the selection is ok, some things are pretty stupid, but there some treasures on there Id shell out a few bucks for to play on the Wii. My wish list is still very far from fulfilled though. |

What I'm curious about is whether or not they'll allow region specific games. Alot of games in that time period were sold only in the US or Japan or wherever because of copyright rights (hence the name changes on lots of stuff) but now that anyone anywhere can download a game, wouldn't it still be infringing on those rights? I'm thinking games like Earthbound, for example. Would the ones that didn't come out here (the Mother games) ever be eligible for download in their original form?
I personally would like them to get into the Saturn era games myself, and to somehow make them online compatible. Honestly, if the games all end up being just offline versions (like we all have on our computer and console emulators now) then it would be a waste of time. With consoles all being online nowadays, the bar has been raised. It'll soon be where the vast majority that owns a home console (Wii, PS3, XB360) will have a PC online also. $5-10 isn't a killer but if you can get the same game for free then... |

Saturn Era JDM games would be nice, like SHinning FOrce III scenario B and C I'd love to see. It's interesting to see the first SNES titles are F-Zero and Sim City, both games I love and launch titles. |

Sega Genesis classics are available for download via the next-gen console's online store.

Nintendo promised that it would add to the roster of Virtual Console titles for the Wii every Monday, and delivered on that promise this week with Super Star Soldier. Now, it appears that VC releases aren't relegated to just one day of the week. Two more titles were made available on the Virtual Console today, as Sega released its Genesis games Golden Axe and Ecco the Dolphin on the service.
Time to party like it's 1989!
Golden Axe is a one- or two-player fantasy action game that pits gamers against the evil Death Adder as a fighter, an amazon, or a dwarf. When the game was released in 1989, one of its hooks was the option to fight mounted on creatures, including fire-breathing dragons and a bird-beaked beast that whipped enemies with its tail. (A remake of the game is currently being readied for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.)
Originally released in 1993, Ecco the Dolphin is a single-player adventure game that casts gamers as the titular porpoise on a quest to find his lost friends. Along the way, Ecco must use his sonar to communicate with other creatures while exploring levels and making sure he doesn't run out of health or air.
Both games sell for 800 Wii points ($ and have been rated E for Everyone. The pair is playable with the Wii Remote, the classic controller, or a GameCube controller. |

As an FYI to anyone out there. If you are looking to purchase Super Mario 64 and think (because it tells you so) that you can use the Classic OR the Gamecube controller you can't.
It REQUIRES classic.

Super Mario 64 doesn't use the N64 controller? Weird. I figured the classic controller would be for Genesis/SNES/NES games since it simply doesn't have the neccessary buttons to be 100% compatible. Still, unless they can convert all of the VC games to online then I still won't waste my time. I can play SM64 with a handicapped pad on my PC now , if I wanted it that way. That is just lame.
I would also hope they release the Gameboy library games and make them all online compatible (using the Wii as the link cable) once they faze out the GBA entirely. Doing it now wouldn't make a bit of bisuness sense tho it would make me happy. |

Actually Super Mario 64 -does- use the Gamcube controller. You just have to plug it into slot 1 which is the one farthest from the gamecube memory card slots. |

Juvenile mascot's retro platformer joined on the Wii by Columns, Ristar, and Victory Run.

Nintendo has pledged to provide new Virtual Console games every Monday, and today's batch includes a quartet of selections from the Sega Genesis, the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the TurboGrafx-16.
Nintendo had the NES version of Donkey Kong available to download on the day the Wii launched, and now it has reunited ape father and son: Donkey Kong Jr. has arrived on the Virtual Console. Originally released on the system in 1986, the game features the offspring of the original Kong attempting to free his father from the clutches of fellow Nintendo mascot Mario. Donkey Kong Jr. is available for 500 Wii points ($5).
Representing the Sega camp is a pair of games virtually bookending the Genesis' life span. From the early days of "blast processing," there's 1990's gem-addled puzzle game Columns, while 1995's platformer Ristar was released in the console's latter days, when Sega was splitting its attention along a swollen product line that included the Genesis, the Sega CD, the 32X, the Game Gear, and the Saturn. Columns and Ristar both sell for 800 Wii points ($ .
Finally, Hudson Entertainment has another TurboGrafx-16 game on tap in the racing game Victory Run. Challenging players to complete a marathon taking place over the course of multiple days, Victory Run lets players perform maintenance on their cars to keep parts from wearing out over the course of the race. Victory Run is available for 600 Wii points ($6). |
