In a pretty bold move, Radiohead have pwnned the record industry and are releasing their forthcoming LP "In Rainbows" themselves next week on the 10th! Digital downloads (DRM-free) of their new album will be available for a low, low price of... whatever you want to pay. You choose the price. Seriously. You can pay a bloody cent if you want.

They are also releasing a discbox (supposedly shipping early December) which contains the album on CDs & vinyl, along with artwork, booklets, etc. Also, the CD proper will be released in stores sometime in early 2008

Surprise announcement, as I've been waiting a long time for some new Radiohead tunes!

I've been keeping up with this a while, and while I love the concept, it seems like Radiohead is actually inadvertently ripping their fans off. Read this. (And notice all the Radiohead songs throw in)

But anyways, I really like this idea, and have actually ordered the mp3 download for an undisclosed price. I'll just say that I think their music is worth something. And of course they aren't leaving fans "high and dry" on purpose, they're letting fans pay what they want.

It's just a very interesting game to watch pay out.

No, sir. At least not that we know of. There is only one website that the album is available at. Radiohead is seeking to avert all capitalistic gains from this album, including iTunes.

shadokastur, you'll never find an official Radiohead album on iTunes.

Good find on the article, Akanari. The "Knives Out" cue was funny. It's also funny how corporations have our minds trained on price structures. iTunes makes us believe that 99 cents per song is a good deal. Reminds me of gas prices. Buying gas for under $2.50 per gallon seems "cheap". Yet, only a handful of years ago, it was less than half that cost per gallon.

Awesome. I suppose it will only be available through their website then?

Awesome idea. And people may say that they are "gouging" but fans truly know what they are willing to pay for music. Especially fans of those bands who wish for them to CONTINUE to make music. Established musicians don't live off a day job 9-5er and I'd happy pay to get more Radiohead. If you think of all the folks out there who will "short change" those who pay what they feel is fair will balance that out. It's smart - but I feel only something an established band would be able to pull off.

More that just averting capitalism, they also have mentioned that they won't sell their music on iTunes because they believe that an album as a whole is a piece of art (that the entire thing comprises the work), and allowing people to purchase just one song is like cutting the art into pieces and sh**ing in the face of what an album is. So if iTunes had the option of just allowing people to buy and album, and not a song at a time, they would probably do it.

Yeah - if you wanted to buy just a popular song - buy a soundtrack. Wink

(Osiris makes fun of me for purchasing soundtracks but sometimes it's an artform in itself - a mixtape from the director so to speak)

I'm digging that discbox though. Dunno about shelling out over $80 for it at this point yet. ~sigh~ House ownership eats the moneys!
