I put this here because it's kinda deep. Basically what it boils down to is this: Do you think that wanting to be remembered after you die is stemmed from a fear of dying? I mean, if you want to be remembered by everyone you've met in life after you die, that's kind of like living on in them. But eventually we all fade into the pages of time, and the memories of our lives die within a few generations. LOL this isn't supposed to be as dark as it sounds, and to those who are comfortable with their own mortality, it shouldn't be. Anyway, just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on the matter. We're all snowflakes, and we'll all melt one day Wink

Yay, Death!

Really, this is one of my favorite subjects, because like, no one, can claim personal expertise. It's almost always out of our control, and it happens to everyone. The great equalizer. I'll stop praising death now. (I constructed a coffin!)

I'm not entirely sure about what remains of a person after death, so I can't decide if it's fear of death that makes a person want to remain...or something else?

The goal of our lives is to continue. Through procreation, good deeds, money, family. We want our DNA to survive. In modern humans, I think we translate that to our memories. We want to make a difference, biologically, or psychologically, on the world.

In our own little ways. Personally, I'm not so sure about procreating myself, I don't really feel it would be moral of me to add to the human population. However, it would be nice to leave a mark. Or stain, depending on the perception. I certainly don't want my body to be imposing on the environment. Just put me in the ground in a cardboard box. Or leave me to the wolves. Or vultures. Really, the body is just organic material after the brain stops. I've thought about this a lot.

I kind of wish some of the stuff in the Bible about death is true. I really want to ask if Mary Magdaline had a foot fetish, or if Jesus considered the way he died to be strangly fitting...

If you think the live by the sword die by the sword mentality...

Regarding death I think it is kind of corny, but Braveheart had the best quote IMO on the subject.

All men die, but not all men really live.

I can tell, I have to. Sometimes I wonder who'd show up at my funeral. I wanna go like Donnie from The Big Lebowski. Except don't scatter me into the ocean. Mix my ashes in a cement mixer for a house for the homeless or something (unless as a result it becomes structurally unsound, like building a city on rock n roll)

I've always hated the idea of my remains being locked in a box, sealed in cement and buried 6 feet under when my decomposing remains could be returned to the earth and nurture some new life. it all seems so very unnatural to me. If I could be buried and have a tree planted in my abdominal cavity that would be extremely righteous. I already have a deep sense of isolation in identity so, to me, being returned to my material source would be beautiful to the point of profundity.

I kind of want to be cremated but I have this fear of being buried alive and if my fear extends to cremation, I'm afraid of not being quite dead when they start the process. Another thing is that if the zombie apocalypse is unleashed I would like to be the rogue zombie on Humanity's side ala Simon Garth.

Well, most people agree the human lifespan is too short to get all the stuff we want done in, so fear of death is kind of fundamental. Plus, with nobody who's done it and lived to tell the tale yet, nobody really knows what it's like, and whether there will be any chance that the process could be reversed.

outside of a religious method for immortality of the spirit, true immortality comes from living on in the memories of others whose lives you touched. but here is the real challenge, since memories can be false, can you prove you were ever alive in the first place?
