Damn! I could have gotten 5 grand in High School.
Actually getting a 5 on a AP test can be potentially easy or hard depending on the students taking it. The ratings are based off a standard distribution of how students performed on the test. Even if everyone did exceptional, only students that out performed by 2 standard deviations would get a 5. |

Ming has already heard my shpiel about this. I'll just throw out the fact that when going to school, they discovered that my mom and dad made a bit more mney from the previous year.
Grants were taken away, and loans were replaced.
When asked for the reason, they school said that they are required by state to audit student financial information.
We found out its just a school policy.
That made us mad.

Well, its not exactly discrimination. The money goes to ANY student who does well on the tests, not just the low-income. They're just trying to motivate more of the ethnic students by bribery to study harder and do better in school.
In a perfect world, which only exists in the minds of the school system, they would be bribing ghetto students to get off the streets and study to make the grades for the AP tests...and earning them college credit to get them on the path of higher education. The concept runs like an after-school special.
What they really want is to boost their overall test scores, and make themselves look good.
I got shafted in school where I was never given the option of taking any AP tests in HS. But then again, I regarded myself as being smarter than the kids killing themselves in the AP classes. I made the A's in the on-level and didn't have the stress where the AP kids worked themselves to death to only get B's that got quality pointed to equal an A. It explains how our top student graduated with a 4.3 GPA!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A real bit of discrimination is going on in GA schools where they've just announced that students who are on the "free lunch" program are now entitled to free tutoring...
I don't have an article on this yet though.
Snarky voice in my head says: So now the "underpriveleged" are now poor AND stupid?" Yet, they're smart enough to milk the system for a free ride.
As an aside, my mom is a recently retired middle school teacher where I've heard all sorts of inside info about what really goes on. Its not pretty. |
