I can understand that but right now in the game that i am running I have a player with NO imagination and an OCD attention to detail. keeping a certain minimum of brain function needed helps keep the group going and makes sure that everybody is on the same page. If I were using 4th edition she would noe the rule but still be a horrible role player. the game isn't for every body and I just feel that 4th edition tries to make it that way. I personally like having a group that i know I can throw complex things and situations at and it won't slow them down.

Ok, so is it a bad thing many people want to try new things, that now Joe the jock likes to use his imagination once in awhile and play a rousing D&D game, or that Mary the damn hyper cheerleader wants to throw down on the card game Magic and yell out bitch I PWN you! No not really. What is bad though, is sitting back and trying to keep a game life a secret. That is really, dare i say it? Yes I do, LAME.. And rather pathetic. So people are becoming more accustomed to and more intrigued by our more "geekier" activities. I think it's great, you'll hear less cracks about being a geek as soon most everyone will be what was considered "geek". I've reached my peak, I can't speak anymore on this as I'll go into an angry rant.

Oh man!

I had this problem for a LOOONNGG time too, Kothar. For me it all came down to the question of were we playing "for quality hang-out time" or "for the love of the story?" It has been both, especially when we all got together and had no money with which to do anything else. That was cool to begin with but the more I came to love RPing the less i wanted players that didn't respect, or weren't able to handle BOTH aspects of the experience. If I had a person that disrupted or lessened the the gaming experience in some consistent way I would not invite them back or, if they were good friends of mine, we would just do something else while they were around. And if they asked i would have to tell them the truth about how I felt their playing style (or lack thereof) was taking away from the whole. The other big problem is when you find a great player who's character or style just doesn't fit into the current game situation. You just can't have a draconian shaman cleptomaniac in a group of Paladins. Even if the player nails every little aspect of that character it will diminish the gameplay for his group and that's not an acceptable trade-off.*

So, I sympathize, Kothar. Really I do. So, all you need to ask yourself is "Are we playing 'for quality hang-out time' or 'for the love of the story?' " Everything else falls into place after answering that.

REY

* The ONLY WAY I see that this group situation would work is if the Draconian shaman was being protected/escorted by the paladins somewhere (maybe to testify in court against/for someone) and they HAD to put up with him. And every town at which they were supposed to meet the armored caravan they had just miss it because the Draconian had caused them some delays with his antics. Which, all in all, would make this campaign f-ing HILARIOUS!

To some extent, yes, it is bad. But instead of talking about identity issues, I want to take this in another direction. Many of the activities in question allow the person to escape reality and enter complex worlds where social norms no longer hold any substance and they are free to be whomever they choose without consequence and without fear of being ridiculed or ostracized.

When I think back to middle school, where I first started playing Magic at lunch with my other geeky friends, it was specifically the "Joe the jock" and "Mary the cheerleader" type people that were cause of the ridicule and ostracism I mentioned above. Instead of just letting us do what we wanted to do, they insisted on coming over, touching our stuff, and poking fun.

So back to the issue at hand, why would I want to, and why should I, let these people into this world that was created in order to escape them? I understand the point that you're trying to make, but you have to be able to look at this from the other perspective.

I would say, Ming, that this would be the ultimate victory. Especially if they ended up really liking it.

Ray makes it easy to RP with. He is an amazing story teller. Anyone who got to partake of his adventures, got to take part of a true gifted person's imagination.

I miss those days. Smile

I assume you mean "gifted" as in "special" like riding small busses or taking special classes in school? If so, thank you so much.

p.s. I still play your retired characters. Wink

Resurrecting this post to point out that the hobbies we know and love are not as well known as we beleive. Also, the discussion of ostracism and being joined by those that used to ostracize. Try going to a school where you are once again ostracized due to your hobbies, I have.

Ever since I started law school, I am once again on the fringe of the student body that is misunderstood, only there is only 1 other person in the school that is on that fringe that I have met so far, and believe me, I have tried to find others I can communicate with on my level.

The first day it was cold and raining here, I wore my trenchcoat to school, protects books quite well. Some people literally made jokes about the Trenchcoat Mafia and Unibomber behind my back. I felt like I haven't since freaking middle school.

Try entering an environment like that once again, instead of just remembering what it was like. You will take interest and curiousity in what you enjoy over it any day.

Also, in a rare conversation soon after AWA, I had to go on a short detour to explain to the people I was talking to what anime is. So it is not quite as exposed as it seems to us in the middle of it.
