Plato annoys me. I read the Republic, which is supposedly Socrates ideals, yet, Socrates never really touched on politics from what I've been taught. Was Plato simply trying to bring approval to his ideas by saying the were Socrates'? |

D, what do you think of John Locke's: Second Treatise of Govenment?

as i understand it, Plato made use of Socrates as a character to express his own views. Soc' had such a reputation that people would pay attention to anything with his name on it - that helped the appeal of Plato's writings. simultaneously, if Plato wanted to say something controversial he could just put it in Soc's mouth. since he was long dead (hemlock, you know) it was a perfect scapegoat.
but it wouldn't be a stretch to say that a lot of Plato's writings do reflect things Socrates actually believed, since Plato studied under him and all. but i'm not sure exactly what the historical truth is vs the Plato version, since most of what we know of Socrates is channeled through Plato anyway.

I am the wisest person in the world because Socrates said so! Hmmm....what to ask Ted to get him really riled up...
Oh yeah! Shouldn't this thread be named The Tough Questions; From Aristotle to Zeno...or something like that? I mean, E isn't even CLOSE to the end of the alphabet...

no, because Socrates said so.
also because that whole alphabet thing didn't even come to mind when i was titling the thread; Aristotle is at the far end of the philosphical time scale, and existentialism is a lot more recent. it makes for chronological extremes, not alphabetical.

"I think therefore I am." seems kind of limiting to me. As I see it, thoughts are the sum of past experience. Which would pose the question: how does an infant know it exists? Also what is the origin of that which thinks? |
