set a loud annoying alarm clock across your room, that way you have to get up to turn the damn thing off, and you'll be up. Immediately go to the bathrrom, shave, do whatever. Yeah you'll be pissed, but hey, at least you got some kind of sleep.

Too much can have the same effect as sleeping too little. You have to maintain good seratonin levels to stay healthy and happy. That's why so much depression goes on in the Winter because nobody goes outside and it's usually overcast. At least get outside and walk around the neighborhood. It will help. I've always felt better after exercising. Now I just gotta do it more often. ^_^ |

Actually, I have heard studies that say sleeping less than 4 or 6 hours (don't remember which one) or more than 8 hours can increase your mortality rate.
I have trouble sleeping most of the time, although its been better lately, and I think its because I wasn't on a normal sleep schedule, as Doot suggested. I think I also might have a slight case of insomnia, although I find I really don't need much sleep anymore to function. 6 hours is plenty for me, although 7 or 8 is preferred.
And definitely do what Terin says, because that's how I get my lazy ass out of bed every morning. It sucks, and kinda hurts, for a while, but eventually you wake up completely.

ok buddy
we seem to have complete histories of each other so lemme throw in my two cents
When someone has issues such as this, especially with the yo-yo effect of sleeping, then it's very important to establish a pattern and stick to it. So I would start forcing yourself to sleep when you want to go to bed, and wake up by alarm the same time everyday. Now this of course sounds easy but if you do need medication I can suggest a few for different scenarios
Over the counter meds: Valerian root is an herb known to gently ease people to sleep over an hour or so. As the wonderful Doot already said, St. John's Wort
Anti-Depressants: Please don't view this category as meaning that you are depressed. AD's are used for sleep, depression, pain managment and other stuff as well. Trazadone, Amitriptylline, and other such meds are AD's that help you stay to sleep. If your porblem is staying asleep when you hit the pillow it may be as simple as taking one of these to keep you there.
Narcotics: Now if your problem is actually falling to sleep then a narcotic sedative may be an option. Be warned some narcotics can be EXTREMELY addictive and must never be doubled dosed unless under the strict guidance of an M.D. Tha being said you have alot of options which vary in potency and effectiveness. Lower powered narcotics include phenobarbital and codeine. Now if you really need to be put down then they can use harsher drugs such as Vicodin, Dilaudid, and Valium.
Non-Narcotic Relaxants: These can still be harsh but tend to have a much less addictive life and less side affects. Such as Flexiril, Soma, and Robaxin.
Over the counter sedatives: These are over the counter but please beware no to abuse because they can damage your system if not taken properly. Anti-histamines include Benadryl and Tylenol-PM. ***WARNING*** Anti-histamines can have what we call an untoward effect. This means it can actually make some people hyper and opposed to sleepy. Otherwise you can try Dextra-Morphan which is Ny-Quil but that really shouldn't be taken over time and used alot.
I hope some or all of this helps
Get back to me and tell me what happens
Dr. Excel |
