Make-Believe Management: Case Study 2 - Chicken, meet Cleaver

Schedules. Deadlines. Structure.

Something within those words excite this young corporate worker. Where I find a distinct comfort in these common operations in work, I notice, it is not everyone's cup o' tea.

Take for instance today's case study. The worrywart.

When faced with an impromptu project set within, let's say, 2 hours time, what normally is a 30 minute process takes up the entirity if not more than the 120 minutes.

First the worrywart throws his hands in the air with extreme discontent and then paces. He doesn't pace just anywhere, no, he trudges along greatening the carpet moat that has somehow been constructed in front of your desk, howling like some wounded animal.

I take it as the sense that my workspace is a detrimental castle in the center of the Kingdom of Corporate. Alas, we have no damsels in distress in the highest tower, no, but we do have a crazy butcher (deadlines) who is chasing after the chicken (the worrywart) in the courtyard.

Now, instead of actually progressing to do the job which has been offered to him, the worrywart continues to moan and grieve on how there shouldn't be any expectations of meeting this deadline given to him oh so little minutes ago... the castle clock now says 30 minutes have passed and no work has been done.

Now I'm not one so inclined to think that it is by any means correct, in situations like these, to just drop a menial task on someone and stamp it "RUSH" but I find it quite entertaining that as the deadline draws nearer the chicken is certifiably FREAKING OUT!

Still not making his way to completely the deadline, still exasperated and fuming like a now mad chicken, I wonder if the butcher wants such a meaty treat. My moat is growing, and I just sit back watching from my window that crazy chase going on in the courtyard.

After another 20 minutes of the sorrowful story I hear, I multitask and complete the assignment while watching this extravegant display of occupational defeat. The courtyard grows quiet. It seems the Queen (me) has borrowed the butchers sharp utensil and finally caught the poultry.

And we all know a chicken can go on for a good while without it's head.

I'm just glad it can, minus the squawking.
