It's interesting to see all the different responses. Tobias, let me say that I think you are lucky to have a family that you feel knows you so well and that you can turn to them and support them always. That is a rare thing. For those of you that think that friends come first you already know that I agree. I guess the one thing that I can say is that you need to find what is most valuable in your life and hang on to it, give yourself to it completely. You'll never go wrong.

To me friends should be considered incredibly high on my list because they are the few people who understand me. or perhaps they are the few people i let understand me. im not a black and white person, too much gray area, and i think that friends are the ones who see that the best. family isnt what it used to be in todays world.

Too true. I think that the idea of a close-knit family unit comes from before the Industrial Revolution when entire families would be with each other all day every day, working in the feilds or doing weaving or the family business. It was a very interdependent relationship with a single common goal: To keep the family going. Now the only time that families are together is at dinner and breakfast, and even then it's a very rare thing for that to happen. Through industrialization the time that families spend together have grown less and less, the parents going off to work, the kids going off to school, making it so that they each form their own, independent social lives, causing a great rift in family ties. This isn't to say that this a good developement or a bad developement. There are pluses and minuses to both. It's just important to think about where we come from and why we're here.
