That, and just different versions of an "evil" elf by different writers. I'm not the most well-versed in fantasy though. However, I just play a dark elf in EQ2, my characters (DnD and FFRP) are usually your generic lighter elf Smile

(AKA, I'm still trying to figure out my persona. So many decisions!!)

Shandriz, by the way, is -not- afraid of the light at all, having lived on the surface world for the past..oh, I'd say almost six hundred years. She's a modified drow-- with an expanded lifespan because I felt like it.

I should mention that there actually -is- no difference between a Drow and a Dark Elf (or Night Elf, if you're a Warcraft fan) except the name and genre in which the character is created/played.

Well, there are certainly differences. Mainly the concept of an elf with darker colored skin of a black, blue or purple hue are constant.

I'm not exactly sure what the background on DnD style Drow are, but it has something undergroundy involved

The Dark Elves in Everquest are called Teir'dal, but folks just refer to em as dark elves. The Teir'dal are essentially a perversion of the original elves by a different creator god, whereas the wood elves and high elves were of the same creator, just different living styles. The whole evil personality definately carries over though, as their drive in life is fueled primarily by hate.

The Night Elves of Warcraft are where the similarities are even further apart. Not only do they have darker skin, but their eyes glow either white or yellow depending on gender, and their ears are long and almost rabbit-esque. In Warcraft lore, the Night Elves were the first race of people to inhabit the land. Instead of underground, they lived amongst giant trees more like the wood elves of other worlds' lore. Then there was a demonic invasion and magic was introduced into the world. Previously the night elves were either following the ways of the moon goddess or a druidic nature-based thang. Those that chose to study magic were banned from society, and eventually moved to the eastern continent and relished in the sun. Their skin lightened, and they became the "traditional" high elves. etc. etc.

Cobbi, remember where you are. That was actually quite interesting ^_^

Like many typicalities of character-type, it's usually just redundancies of the same basic concept. That's why I didn't base my characters on games ^_^ They were originally based on books, I'll admit, but since then, their story and characteristics have dovetailed from what might normally have been predicted. My mage didn't have a gifted son. My mage has loved, lied, stolen, cheated, and killed in cold blood, all while remaining a mage who is aligned with good. My mage has faults. He has done the wrong thing, and he has suffered for it. My mage will have an unhealthy fascination with dark elves/drow, if/when he meets them ^_^
