What chipset are you using? I had an AMD compy once that the chipset went bad and overheated.

Another possibility could be that you are running out of memory.

A good try to fix is to reinstall your OS.

Updating window's fixed it. I'm not sure why it started freezing to begin with, but updating fixed it. Thanks Shino!

If you use IE, there are a lot of security issues, you may have had some spyware that was coming in and killing your performance to the point of freezing. MS has their own spyware killer that you can get via Windows update, so that may have been it.

Anyway, glad it's back up and running for ya. Wiggle

Hey Shino,

I need to upgrade my motherboard/PCU/Graphics card to accomodate Battlefield 2 and Oblivion, but as anyone would be, I'm on a budget. What's the cheapest way I can upgrade? I'm looking for a board with a PCI express slot. I don't need the best graphics card, but somewhere in the 512 would be nice.

Terin if I were you I'd get a socket 939 AMD chip(any speed) an ASUS or DFI mobo and a GeForce 6600GT. 256mb of video memory is all you really need, having 512mb over 256 is like having 2gb of ram instead of 1gb on most machines, It's there but your video card isn't really fast enough to take advantage of it. Or in the case of windows your OS can't take advantage of it.

Blackmage pretty much gave you what you needed.

DEFINATLY go AMD! The 939 socket is great b/c it's very flexable. It can take the 64, X2 or FX chip depending on your price range (usually lowest to highest in the order I have them).

Probably the best budget card out there. They pretty powerful. Not sure how they match up with BF2, but you can get them for < $120 now. If I was going for a card for Oblivion though, I would probably push up into the higher end stuff... like the 7800 if you can pull it... or even the higher midrange stuff like the 7600... you can get those for about $200ish...

The 6600GT does well on lower settings, but if you want to turn stuff up.. it starts to chop b/c it's just not powerful enough.

Check out this article for some good comparisons...

This is very true. Most of the time the more important thing for a video card is how fast you can get to the ram as opposed to the ram itself. Pipelines are a big thing! You can get off VERY well with a 256M card.

It's not the exact example, but if you go to the CPU/RAM page of the article I sent you... you will see that 1G of Sys Memory and 2G of Sys Memory result in the same performance.

If you have a price range... we could probably help you more.
