Well... at least the rights to publish the OFFICIAL game.

I'm sure there will be others.

Sega to host 2008 Olympics
Publisher from Japan lands rights for event in Beijing; running, jumping, swimming, et al will commence on all major platforms.

Playing host to the world's most popular athletic competition isn't just about vacuuming the floor and making sure there is enough ice. A city that wins its bid to be the backdrop for the international showdown not only brings in spry gymnasts, hulky weightlifters, and everything in between, but also a responsibility to be prepared for the massive influx of visitors.

Though Olympics games of the digital persuasion don't quite draw the same numbers that the real games do, there's still plenty of preparation necessary to get the product to shelves. The first hurdle, finding a company to take on the responsibility of the project, was cleared today. Sega has announced that it has reached an agreement with International Sports Multimedia to publish the official game of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The deal, which ends in 2009, gives publishing rights to multiple platforms, including consoles, PCs, arcade machines, and handhelds, as well as the burgeoning Asian mobile market. Sega has not announced which platforms the game will appear on, nor when they will be available.

"Sega is excited to become the publisher for the Official Video Game of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and we are committed to creating innovative content for an unprecedented number of interactive entertainment platforms," said Hisao Oguchi, President and Chief Operating Officer of Sega. "This project will enable Sega to further enhance our global entertainment business and drive sales in critical Asian markets like China that offer an extremely high growth potential."

The game will apparently feature an ambitious lineup of several of the Olympics events, including baseball, boxing, sailing, table tennis, and wrestling.

The olympics games -always- suck. Except for that one game that actually starred the olympic mascot at the time, It was during the mid 90s, it was like a walking torch or something. That was a decent game. Other than that, blah.
