Well this sucks!

Come on, aren't you making enough on your rediculously priced new Dreamblade game?

And because of this, Starcity has now pulled their preorders for Timespiral...

What a load of $h17!
I actually had preorder items in my cart and they emptied it.

Due to global economic pressures and certain cost increases, Wizards of the Coast will increase the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of its front list and backlist Magic: The Gathering® Trading Card Game and Star WarsTM and Dungeons & Dragons® Miniatures products effective September 22, 2006. Accordingly, Wizards will increase the price of its Magic: The Gathering Online® products effective October 6, 2006. Even with this increase, our games remain competitively priced with other products in the industry and will continue to deliver the high quality our fans have come to know. As always, our retail customers have the freedom to charge whatever price they see fit.

The MSRP increase will affect the following products:

Magic: The Gathering & Magic: The Gathering Online

Booster Packs: $3.99
Tournament and Theme Decks: $12.29 (excluding 9th Edition Core Set Theme Decks)
Fat Packs: $34.99

Dungeons & Dragons® and Star WarsTM Miniatures

Booster Packs: $14.99
Huge Packs: $21.99

Well I'll take Wizards' side first:
At least they notified people first, they could have just raised the prices whenever. They are a company that's in business to make money, after all. Also, the prices are right in line with most other games.

Now the counterpoint:
Wizards sucks ass. They are the number one card producing company, owned by a monster in the industry (Hasbro) and all they continually do is crank out different flavors of vanilla (Magic). Every game they have (including some licensed products) are simply Magic with a different skirt on. They are just tailors selling the emperor new clothes every month.

And finally MY point of view:
I don't play Wizards games at all. Since they lost Pokemon (and subsequently slammed The Pokemon Company over it) I have not even bothered to check their webpage more than five times. If my girlfriend wasn't curious about Star Wars and Shino hadn't told me about Dreamblade (aka Magic the Miniatures) I wouldn't even remember who they are. The games I am interested in are all produced by other companies so this really doesn't affect me. I also have a store that I go to that sells stuff for way below MSRP (somehow) and charges no tax so I'll still get a better deal on my gaming supplies. Chalk one up for the disgusting Southwest and it's lower cost/class of living.

Yeah, this pretty much blows. I had heard about this, but I didn't think that they were going to do it so soon, and that really sucks that StarCity pulled the preorders instead of honoring them. Although, that doesn't really surprise me. As much as I like StarCity and as great as their customer service is, they do tend to be a bit on the high side when it comes to prices.

And with regard to the actual prices themselves, some mass-market places, like Target and Toys R Us, already sell packs of Magic for $3.99. Hell, Kay-Bee Toys sell them now for $4.99. It just means you have to really pick and choose when you're gonna buy packs, and if you are gonna buy them, you should try to get the most mileage outta them by drafting.
