I'm getting a ferret within the next month or so and I know a few of you have ferrets. I've been reading Ferret's for dummies and am going to volunteer at a ferret shelter in the area. I'll probably end up adopting one from there. I'm wondering what cages you have and how you like them.

Well, there are a bunch of things to consider when purchasing your fuzzy ches. If you're getting one, or many, as well as if your getting males or females. I know Hobbes got to about the size of 2 and 1/2 regular sized ferrets, so he was a big guy. IF thats the case, you want to have the cage space. Additionally, you want to have the space to put a litter pan. If there is one suggestion i can give, it is to try and get your ferret to go in a pan rather than in a corner. If you do, it'll make your life that much easier (it's one of the things i regret about raising hobbes.)

aye...i remember when that first was put in place. I almost went to the rally that they had...me and Hobbes. That was back in the good ol days.

Anywho, im all up for ferrets. They really impact your lives...i know if you have ever read threads that either myself or ming have put up about hobbes, they have a strange ability to make you feel good, no matter what.

I'll be adopting from a shelter so I'll get the ferrets full grown. I want a total of three eventually I think.

Just a heads up, Ches: Ferrets usually only live about 6-8 yrs. So don't get one too grown or you may not have 'em very long.

Pandora is AWESOME and I would highly recommend getting a ferret to anyone. I love my "little rat" and all my bases that aren't my family's are belong to her. But it's hard to potty train them (I gave up). If you do intend on getting a litter pan make sure it's one that the ferret is just able to back up into and do it's duty. They're not too keen on doing much work unless it's stealing your stuff and hiding it from you. YES! They are little thieves. A ferret will take things that make cool noises or are shiny and put it in it it's "stash" area. Find their stash and you will save yourself a good bit of wondering where that funny smell is coming from (my ferret has a gross habit of stealing my baby's USED diapers :yuck: and hiding them). And speaking of smell ferrets naturally have a strong odor about them even if they are de-scented but this can be kept down by regular bathing (about 1-2x / week). Regardless of these things I would still get a ferret any day of the week over any other animal.

Now female ferrets won't get as big as male ferrets (some male ferrets will hit the 3 & 1/2 foot mark!!). My ferret is about 14 inches and won't get much bigger, but I got a really big cage for her (4'x 3'x 1 & 1/2') last Christmas.

They are sneaky thieving little devils. My brother is taking care of his friend's two ferrets for the week. They steal shiny things. I love the weird little weasels, but my mom hates them and makes them stay in the basement.
They're very good at getting into odd small places. Earlier today one crawled into the subwoofer and it was a pain getting her out. And they sleep most of the time anyway, but when they're awake they're bundles of energy. I'd get a large-ish cage so your ferret has room to move around and exercise a bit if you can't let him run around the room.
