Web Browser and TV Tuner for DS
The dual-screen handheld system goes beyond games.
by Anoop Gantayat

February 15, 2006 - Fueled by success in appealing to non gamer types with its Touch Generations lineup of alternative games, Nintendo has announced plans for two new applications that will take the DS even further beyond the gaming realm. At a press conference held in Tokyo today, the company unveiled a web browser and a television tuner for the system.

The web browser, imaginatively titled "Nintendo DS Browser," has been developed as a cooperative project between Nintendo and Opera Software. The application, which is based off Opera mobile browser software, uses the bottom screen to display pages in their full and the top screen to show close ups of content. Users can also use the two screens as one tall vertical window. The touch pen is used for inputting characters, with ATOK Japanese recognition software built in.

Perhaps even more exciting is an accessory that converts the DS into a television. Starting in April, a service called 1seg (pronounced One Seg) will begin airing digital broadcasts for mobile devices throughout Japan. A number of cell phones capable of receiving the broadcasts have been announced, and now Nintendo is getting in on the action with the tentatively named DS Terrestrial Digital Broadcast Receiver Card.

This card turns your DS into a television capable of receiving 1seg broadcasts. Channels are switched using the touch pen, with the broadcast viewed on the top screen. The prototypes Nintendo had at the press conference were running via the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot, but the final version of the card will plug into the DS card slot.

Nintendo will release the web browser to Japan in June at a cost of 3,800 yen. The digital broadcast tuner card is currently without a date. Both products are, as of this writing, set for Japanese release only, but once we hear from Nintendo of America, we'll let you know what's up on our side of the Pacific.

oooh Opera...

I just can't see wanting to watch staticy TV on a DS...Or a TV. Especially when Antennas are done away with and all Television transmisions will be via a cable of some sort.

And surfing the internet from my DS, a PSP or a Phone has always kinda puzzled me.

I agree with Gaaz on this one.

I have use my PSP to get online maybe twice, and once was to try to register for a beta for SOCOM b/c they would only let you register via the PSP browsers... f$ckers!

And ... Didn't Nintendo say they weren't trying to be a "Do it all" kind of machine. All the stuff they are bringing out seems to contridict that.

Next up... the DSGPS? Just b/c Sony's doing it?

Just goes to show you that even the most innovative of companies takes ideas.

Nintendo just needs to stick with what is working for them. They really don't need all these add ons.

Actually I like playing with GPS devices and if Nintendo can make a decent one that adds onto my DS for like $100 I'd buy it. ^_^

Well all of this "innovation" really isn't anything special. All of these consoles are simply computers nowadays. Had the NES had a web browser then that would have been impressive. If the original Gameboy would have had a GPS system then that would have been impressive. Now, it's nothing. If the companies weren't so "personal profit" then they would just build in USB ports to all consoles, home and portable, and their devices would be universally useful. But then they couldn't overcharge you for their versions.

I played online games with my Genesis and surfed the web with my Saturn so all of this is merely passe. When you break it down, Sega did all of this isht decades ago. Didn't the Game Gear have a TV Tuner? And the TurboGrafix too? Give me games for my game system, that's all I ask for. I don't need a GPS feature, I'm a little too old to get lost.

Playing online has really taken off. The PS3 will have an online system much like Live. This will take in the PSP too.

Having a webbrowser on my psp is pretty useless. As it would be for the ds. However I can see it working better for the ds since it has the touch screen.

The TV tuner is not impressive to me. As Razer said, that was done long ago by the Turbo Express and the game gear.

The GPS feature I like though. I imagine my psp mounted on my dash plugged into my lighter giving me directions. Laughing That would be funny.

AGREEMENT! except, for the the browser I might be interested in, it sounds like it will have some neat features, and if its not too expensive, I'd get it, but I wouldn't pay more for it, than for a game.
