Just looking for some advice, any that anyone might be able to offer. Opinions, tips, similar stories, whatever.
I'm a resident of Canada (BC if it matters), and my fiance lives in California. We're planning to get married in April next year, but are feeling a little overwhelmed trying to figure out what happens once we get married as far as work, visas, all that jazz. Help anyone? |

well, you could always punch a government official in the gonads until he gives you a green card, and then hope that that'll work.
On a serious note: What are the laws about citizenship once you get married to someone who is an American resident?
I may be wrong, but i believe you do gain citizenship, or at least a much better shot at gaining citizenship. I don't know if the same works in Canada. If antyhing, can you both be naturalized: Him for Canada and you for the US? |

To be honest, I'm really not sure what the laws are. My fiance, Brandon, does most of the research into this. Though, I have looked over a few pages...I'm not terribly bright, so the government lingo gos right over my head...*laughs*It's gotta be written in baby-speak for me to really get it.
Brandon found something that says that once we get married, we're allowed to spend up to two years in either country. I'm guessing that's before we apply for citizenship...
But it seems that even if we don't get married, neither of us are citizens or residents automatically . >< Why couldn't I find a nice Canadian guy? |

I've heard of a few instances of people having dual-citizenship in Canada and the US. I have a friend who has it. However, his parents are split up, one lives in the US, and the other in Canada, so I assume that's how he works it. But I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get the same, and then be able to live anywhere. |

If I recall rightly, you can apply for citizenship in the United States three years after you marry someone who is a citizen. But don't quote me on that. |

It's probably a safeguard against scammers trying to abuse the system to get citizenship instantly or something. |

I think the dual citizenship has to do with your parent's citizenship and where you're born. My cousin has an England-America citizenship because he was born in England. |
