Bird Flu has appeared in Scotland apparently.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4881850.stm <-- news artical
Our goverment didn't really prepear.
Not suprised.
Typical.
This part just makes me sigh =__=;
Quote: | 'If the virus mutates into a form easily transmitted between humans, drug companies will set to work developing a vaccine.
The government says it will buy 120 million doses of it - enough to treat the whole UK population.
But a vaccine will only be able to be formulated once the pandemic has begun and will take up to six months to prepare.
Drug manufacturers have been invited to tender for the contract in advance.
A stockpile of 14.6 million courses of the antiviral drug Tamiflu is also being built up. This would not be a cure or offer immunity from the disease but could alleviate symptoms and slow its progress.
It would be enough to treat a quarter of the UK population.
The government has also purchased a limited supply of vaccines against one Asian bird flu strain - A/H5N1. It is not known how effective this would be against a mutated strain being transmitted between humans but it might offer some protection.
And leaflets have been sent to health professionals to advise them about what to expect in case of a flu pandemic.
Health staff are being trained in how to deal with a pandemic and NHS bodies are formulating contingency plans which could be brought into play.'
|
Wait till a pandemic is already underway before bothering to make a vaccine? I understand you can't make a vaccine for a virus that hasn't mutated (like they fear it might)... and I understand the cost involved and so on but hows about one for the current form, eh? No? The UK doesn't have a magical force-field like you pig-headed goverment-types thought. Me thinks you've been caught with your pants down. I love the UK. Really. Such a warm and fuzzy feeling.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not one to panic and start fire-bombing birds left, right and centre... this... is just REALLY annoying. SUPER annoying. That, and I have family and friends to worry about, ya know? *sigh* |

I'm really sorry to hear about that Yunni. And you're right, government types are pig-headed.
I'm sure our gov. will act in a similar manner. It's only a matter of time before it gets over here. |

It's really annyoing that NOW they are trying to sort out a plan. Yeah they said they had one before the Swan was discovered, but I doubt 'Bird Flu' was taken seriously until now =_= What happened to the motto 'Be prepeared'? We put a lot of trust into the goverment and the NHS.
It's funny... I watched V for Vendette the other day |

Welll so far, no other cases have been discovered, which is groovy news! But like 'foot & mouth', it's going to reap havok with the food industry >.<
The virus is said to be destroyed when you cook food, but people panic and the goverment want to stop mass infection of domestic poultry. It's the wild birds that's the tricky part, since.... well, they be wild and all
The vision is very vexing! |
