Whee for Check Card comprimisiation

So I go to check my checking account for its balance last night and I look at he balance as -250ish. I go WTF how did I end up THAT far in the hole, I didn't make any purchases over $25. I went and checked my holds and low and behold theres 3 charges to some place called J2 JConnect Service. First one was for $1 the, the second was for $250, and the third for $30. Call Wachovia get their loss prevention dpt get the money refunded back to me and now I have an open case and have to wait a week to get my new Check card...

So I encourage everyone who doesn't check their account on a regular basis to look at it just for wierd anomolies like that.

Something like that happened to my dad a couple of years ago. Fortunately, I think banks are pretty good and refunding your money and remedying the issue nowadays. At least they were in our situation, and it sounds like they are in your case as well.

You have to be careful when you use an ATM. I heard a news report on the radio that was talking about this, and said that the thieves put these things on the card readers that are called "skimmers" that read all the information on your magnetic strip, and are not noticible unless your paying attention to it. Then, they have someone monitoring you through video camera or something similar and watch you enter your pin so they get that too. So they suggest making sure you cover the keypad when you enter your code.

I think it was more of a someone guessed my number and just went around using it as a Visa as they were all credit transactions online.

Could have picked it up from many, many sources. Credit card numbers are not the most secure things in the world anymore.

I know that the card machines at restaurants print your whole number on the store copy that you sign.

The store copy of any reciept generally has your entire card number on there. The vast majority of stores and restaurants are very responsible about destroying the store copies once they're used, but occasionally some of these get lost or find their way into the wrong person's hands.

Or the idiots take the store copy off their table and leave me the one with big black letters saying "CUSTOMER COPY"

Larger Corporations don't print all of the card # but instead print the last 4 digits along with a trace number.
