DirectTV and IGN are bringing professional gaming to the picture tube.
by Kathleen Sanders
May 8, 2006 - Starting next year DirectTV, Microsoft's Xbox, Mountain Dew, Fox, Best Buy, and those scruffy bastards at IGN will launch the Championship Gaming Series. This new fully professional videogaming league will be broadcast into homes across the country thanks to this new partnership.
The CGS will be an on-going series of competitions leading up to the Dew Cup. Further details regarding the "Dew Cup" will be revealed later, but for now it is speculated that it is filled with the titular sweet, nuclear green hyper-nectar.
"This league will be unrivaled," added Dale Strang, executive vice president and general manager of IGN Entertainment. "In short, the CGS will treat its players in the same manner as traditional sports: huge prize money, instant payouts and massive media coverage using traditional and new media."
The first tournament will take place on July 21, 2006. The three tournaments this year are considered a warm-up for the start of CGS league play in 2007. Through digital media on broadcast and here at IGN.com the geek-letes of the CGS and their frag-sploits will be available 24-7-365. This makes it perfect entertainment fodder for those four A.M. buzz plateaus.

I hope they plan on covering more than FPS. Because that can get boring after a while. Plus, other games take loads of skill other than FPS.
When they start showing fighting games, gimme a call. |

Hrm. Hopefully, the league will showcase all types of masteries, both PC and console - fighting games, FPS, puzzle power, dance gaming, those sorts of things. |

Wow, that a moment.
I dunno, I wonder if they're pushing this too soon? THen again this is the gaming generation. I hope it turns out well and some people make some money off of it. Just our luck they'll be a bunch of lamers and show RTS and FPS games.
I know one of those Farcry/Source/BG2 people who consideres himself a gamer and I asked what FPSs he was playing most and he said, "Whats an FPS?". These are the people we'll get on these shows I bet. |
