So this morning I was channel surfing and I passed by an ad on Animal Planet that was little more than a Bob Barker-esque "spay or neuter your pets" reminder. The sponsor? The Humane Society of the United States. So I gets to thinking, "where have I heard that name before?" and I do a little searching. Lo and behold, I find this article laying bare the facade of the HSUS being anything more than yet another animal rights (not animal welfare) group, with interests against the meat and dairy industries.

These groups just get on my nerves - they'll talk up shelter animals (including assisting Animal Planet in the making of the show Who gets the dog?), yet they do not own, control, or primarily assist any shelter in the United States. In fact, the one time they attempted to start a shelter, they ultimately withdrew their offer because Washington DC would not completely sell them the land and give them tax-exempt status on not just the shelter, but all real estate holdings in DC. That's right, they wanted full tax-exempt status on every piece of land they owned or leased in the nation's capitol.

Why do these animal rights groups cheese me off so much? Far from actually promoting the welfare of animals, they seek to make animal-based industries economically unfeasible in order to push their own agendas down people's throats. The HSUS was part of the push to give pregnant pigs constitutional rights in Florida, making pork farming approximately worthless because the measures that were outlawed included the gestation crates that assured that a sow would not roll over and crush the piglets.

Just to cap off the rant, these groups also ally themselves with the terrorist organization known as the Animal Liberation Front (ALF). Check the article - this isn't my opinion speaking; ALF was declared a terrorist threat by the US Dept. of Homeland Security in 2005. They're known for arson, property theft/vandalism, and threats against the lives and livelihoods of those with whom they disagree. PeTA and HSUS have both made financial contributions to the ALF. In addition, PeTA has given substantial "grants" to former ALF member and convicted arsonist Rodney Coronado (who is a leader of the Earth Liberation Front, a group that was declared the top domestic terror threat by the FBI in 2001).

Long story short, the "Humane Society of the United States" is anything but humane, with an operating budget of approximately $95 million but no shelters to its name, and the "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals" is equally interested in the Unethical Treatment of Humans.

Or, for those of you looking for a one-word statement that signifies my whole feeling about the animal rights movement: Grr.

For more interesting facts about the animal "rights" movement, the food nannies, and the fake health-watch groups, check out The Council for Consumer Freedom

I'm not a fat man. At least, I don't think so.

However, I do agree with Mr. Buda here. Cattle, like many other animals, are mostly raised to become a food product of some type. Humans as a species are omnivores. There is very little on this planet we can't eat. I, myself, love steak, bacon and various kinds of poultry.

Please don't misunderstand me, I don't kill animals for sport. I don't kill anything I don't eat. At least not on purpose. We're all a part of the "circle of life". Cow eats grass, man eats cow, lion eats man, man carcas fertilizes grass. And so on and so forth.

Oh yeah, try to take my bacon and you will pull back a nub!

I just hate these organizations because people tend to associate me with them because I'm vegetarian. O__________________O NO, that's not the case. I'm not crazy, and I'm not out to turn the world vegetarian and "save the animals."

In the same way, I think animal cruelty sucks, but I know that blowing up buildings isn't the way to go about solving that problem. Nor is barking zaney propeganda in somebody's face.

Well, I just wanted to point out that cow poo depletes the ozone layer o_O So the more beef people eat, the more cows the meat industry produces, the more likely that we're going to see some major ecological changes within the next hundred years. I'm not saying people should stop eating beef altogether, but if they collectively cut down on the amount of beef they ate, it would help save our atmosphere, not to mention that they would be living a more healthy lifestyle. (Honestly, you don't need to be eating meat with every meal).

And don't start with that whole "if you don't eat meat with every meal you're missing out on proteins and such." There are plenty of other ways to get proteins other than meat, people are just lazy and don't want to balance their meals properly.

And actually, cow manure doesn't have anything to do with ozone depletion - it contributes to the greenhouse effect, but in fact the problem is that the VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) emitted by cow manure combine with nitrogen oxides to produce ozone smog (an ozone-heavy vapor that can trigger asthma).

And the more I read, the more I find that methane doesn't have anything to do with ozone depletion. It's a greenhouse gas, not an ozone-damaging CFC.

I think you misunderstand me. I don't feel the need to have a hearty steak with every meal either. In fact today was entirely meatless for me. I luuuvs pasta!
And really, everybody's poop depletes the o-zone in some way. If cows were left to roam free there would be less cows, true. However there would be more preadators. And what do those preadators do after eating a cow? POOP! Any way you look at it the world will be covered in poo.

No Scrummy, I don't dislike you for your views and I certainly don't think you're a terrorist.
