I am a member of another forum, a fact which has been mentioned before. This forum has a subforum devoted to evidentiary debate of certain topics, including politics, religion, and the like. Note the words evidentiary debate. The regulars of those particular subfora pride themselves on being able to have a discussion about hot-button topics that does not degenerate into a flame war. We have a few trolls - even a few regular trolls. But by and large the group is fact-based and, while not exactly polite, especially when dealing with flaming idiots, fairly civil in nature.

Enter LoserBoy (nick changed to protect the stupid).

LoserBoy trolls a long-running thread. He posts what amounts to a refutation of the original post (which had already been refuted approximately 600 times, if pagecount goes for anything), using little more than a "Because I and some other people say so" argument.

So of course, sharks that we are, we tear him to pieces - failure to follow forum rules, failure to argue from evidence, general failure as a human being. His response?

LoserBoy wrote:
I come from a much more civil forum where they banned discussion about politics and religion because of the flamewars. When the users petitioned to have those discussions unbanned, the admins just pointed here for evidence that it's not possible to have a civil discussion about religion.
Pardon? He came into a forum, flamed, argued from fallacy, and got his post disassembled with a minimum of swear words, and we're the ones not capable of having a civil discussion?

Anyone else had this happen - where someone who can't do something right acts as if not doing it is somehow better than doing it?

Well it all kinda goes back to the fact that it's only a frickin message board. No offense to any message boards, but it's a sometimes vain attempt at substituting actual conversations. Except it lacks the actual part of looking at the person in the eye and saying those things. I bet you if this guy was actually in front of those people it would be much different. It's not just ignorance, it's self esteem and ego as well.

Happens all the time - most posers do that, sometimes under the guise of "Well, I could do it if I wanted, but I don't/my lackeys do that/I'm too cool to actually show you."

Give him the treatment he deserves and make him the first thing stated in a game of Sink.

Hmm, interesting. He didn't by chance mention the name of said board, did he? I find it rather odd, because the things he mentions in that post happened on a board I'm on a long while back. I do not recall the mods showing such an "example" though. If I remember correctly they just said something along the lines of "Shut up! You had you chance and screwed it up!"

Considering he made a hit-n-run post that was reported and deleted within about five minutes (our subforum has such efficient mods!), I didn't think it useful to try to chase him down via PM to ask him which board he was from.
