Yes those of you who may remember from school that there are 9 planets in our solar system...

Well chop off Pluto. It has been "demoted" to "dwarf" planet status.

Linkie

According to the article...
Quote:
According to the new rules a planet meet three criteria: it must orbit the Sun, it must be big enough for gravity to squash it into a round ball, and it must have cleared other things out of the way in its orbital neighborhood. The latter measure knocks out Pluto and Xena, which orbit among the icy wrecks of the Kuiper Belt, and Ceres, which is in the asteroid belt.

I'm really not sure what other "things" floating in it's orbit has to do with anything, but it's not really my decision now is it.

So, the solar system has 11 bodies now that orbit the sun. 8 of which are planets... Lets recap.

Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars

Ceres - asteroid belt
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune

Pluto - Kuiper Belt
Xena - Kuiper Belt

Fun

So, easy trivia, how many of our planets have rings and what are they?

I believe it's just Saturn and Uranus that do, though I haven't studied them in a while. XD.

Rings are just frozen ice and gas and rock, if I remember correctly. <3

I think astrologists need to be smacked for this. Its like telling a kid that Santa exists and then hanging him from the light post on the street corner.

Its just wrong.

Put my pluto back! Think of Disney. They have to rename their dog now.

It doesn't say -all- other things, Buda, just other things. And by the fact that there's an entire -asteroid belt- around Pluto, that's a good sign that it hasn't cleared anything from it's orbit.

Legend... you missed one. Smile

Buda... The idea is that there are things in it's orbit all the time.

there is a point where Pluto is closer to the sun than Neptune... actually it just recently become the outermost again in the past few years I think, but Pluto doesn't stay in Neptunes orbit path. Actually I don't even think it actually crosses the path... I think Pluto's orbit just goes inside of Neptunes at one point.

Something like that.

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune all have rings.

Actually, Pluto is named after the Roman version of the Greek god of the underworld, Hades. So Pluto can still be named Pluto...although Cerberus may be more fitting...

Yup... forgot about Neptune actually. They still don't know what makes up Neptune's rings though. Last I heard anyway.

Great!!!!
Now instead of:

"My Very Elderly Mother Just Served Us New Pizza" helping me remember the planets names and order I'm going to have to switch it to:

"My Very Elderly Mother Just Served Us Nachos!"
