Warner goes Blu-ray exclusive

We've all been wondering what to make of those whispers that Warner was indeed going Blu-ray exclusive, and apparently, those rumblings are true. Based on a breaking release, Warner Bros. Entertainment will be releasing its high-definition titles "exclusively in the Blu-ray disc format beginning later this year." According to Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, the move is a "strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want," and he also noted that "the window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger." Notably, Warner will continue to release on both HD DVD and Blu-ray until May 2008, but after that, it's BD for life for this studio. Oh, and while there's nothing official mentioning any sort of payoff, we're hearing that quite a sum was dished out to make this happen. Full release posted after the jump.

[Via Deadline Hollywood Daily, thanks Todd]

(January 4, 2008 – Burbank, CA) – In response to consumer demand, Warner Bros. Entertainment will release its high-definition DVD titles exclusively in the Blu-ray disc format beginning later this year, it was announced today by Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. and Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.

"Warner Bros.' move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want," said Meyer. "The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers."

Warner Home Video will continue to release its titles in standard DVD format and Blu-ray. After a short window following their standard DVD and Blu-ray releases, all new titles will continue to be released in HD DVD until the end of May 2008.
"Warner Bros. has produced in both high-definition formats in an effort to provide consumer choice, foster mainstream adoption and drive down hardware prices," said Jeff Bewkes, President and Chief Executive Officer, Time Warner Inc., the parent company of Warner Bros. Entertainment. "Today's decision by Warner Bros. to distribute in a single format comes at the right time and is the best decision both for consumers and Time Warner."

"A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry," said Tsujihara. "Consumers have clearly chosen Blu-ray, and we believe that recognizing this preference is the right step in making this great home entertainment experience accessible to the widest possible audience. Warner Bros. has worked very closely with the Toshiba Corporation in promoting high definition media and we have enormous respect for their efforts. We look forward to working with them on other projects in the future."

Well I don't plan on "upgrading" to Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. If they stop making regular DVD discs I'll have to DL them and burn them myself. And I believe that will become a serious consideration for others too. It's not that hard to do. I already have Blu-Ray versions on DVD now.

I don't like being "forced to conform".

Weren't you "Forced to Conform" when companies decided to stop making VHS and started making DVD only?

Not really because the VHS tape had already run its course and the DVD was clearly an upgrade. And the transition was more gradual...not going from a small selection of the "upgrade" to a full selection within 6 months.

I agree with Razer, and I think companies are trying to forcibly change consumer behavior, which I hope blows up in their faces. I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon either...I'm fine with the DVD as it is.

I have to agree with Ming on this one...by the time they phased out VHS, it was mostly out of use anyway. This, to me, feels like they're trying to push consumers in the direction they want to go.

Besides, I thought that The Internet had already decided that blu-ray was going to go down because they weren't going to allow porn?

There's already blu-ray porn

And Microsoft has already said they only wanted HD movies until they work out the kinks in Downloadable movies.

Once they work that out they'll stop supporting HD DVD's

Worth the 20 minutes to watch it. Particularly the Consumption chapter regarding obsolescence. We're refraining as much as possible from buying crap that always tends to have a "lifespan" other than food. We don't own a lot of HD DVD's. Not because of the volume out there, but because any HD video (bluray or HD DVD) is insanely marked up for what you get and it's only causing more disposal of packaging or previously purchased versions of the same item.

I'm researching on how we (hubby and I) can become more "soft" consumers to alleviate the clouded "need" to consume stuff. The easiest way we're doing this is media purchasing at first. Music, movies and games. If we can get soft copy versions of them, we will. If not, then we will either wait or just not pick it up unless we are HUGE fans of the item (read: Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Beer Fest).

I know it's a smidge off topic. A tip of the hat to Warner (/sarcasm) for feeding the most pressing media popularity contest of the new millenium. Hopefully all these industries will wise up and realize there's a better way to innovate. And frankly, HD wars just creates more reasons for everyone to consume. They'll feel part of the "future decision making" process but in turn will only deplete their pockets, buy soon to be obsolete items, and the only one who will win in the end are the companies behind these silly maneuvers.

I admit to buying blu-ray and loving it...plus it actually gives our PS3 some use, otherwise it would be a rather large paper weight currently...

I have to admit, seeing a side by side comparison of Pirates of the Caribbean from normal DVD to Blu-ray version, Mr. Depp and friends looked might hawt crystal clear. Embarassed

(Note- I'm not blu-ray exclusive, I buy whatever format I can use, and I have to like the movie enough, we dont really buy much anyways. Netflix is my friend)

I really don't see DVD going anywhere. It's still the mass market video option. But I've been wanting some sort of HD video option since I first got my HDTV. In many movies... there really is a huge difference.

So now, I'll buy movies on Blu-ray instead of DVD when available. But it's not like I'm upgrading all my current DVDs to HD ones.

Only the movies I LOVE are getting that honor. The only ones that have so far ... the Die Hard Series... including Die Hard in Space! (Fifth Element).

And like Doot said... the price of some of the movies are pretty damn high, but I usually wait until I see specials. Amazon is always running "Buy one get one" and other big sales on Blu-Ray titles. I just got all 3 Resident Evil movies for $60 on Blu-Ray. Along with Cars and Meet the Robinson's for $20 each. The normal retail price of most DVDs.

Just depends where you look. I never buy at Best Buy or other retail stores b/c they are way overpriced.

In reality, this would be the final nail in the coffin of this little "war" with Blu-ray the clear victor, but Toshiba and Paramount inking that $150M deal for the 18 months of HDDVD exclusivity has just extended it that much longer and more so confusing the consumer.
