Unfortunately this happened in my home town, in the high school I went to and I just can't believe it.

Here's the initial story:
http://www.kten.com/Global/story.asp?S=5300325

So I know it's been 4 whole years, but when I was in HS, we weren't even allowed near the junior high because we paraded around chanting "Poor Freshmen." This is just absurd. And since when did they start doing this in HS? Isn't this a classic sorority and fraternity thing? Isn't hazing illegal?

Here's the outcome:
http://www.kten.com/Global/story.asp?S=5318517

And since I'm on the inside and can get more info, I've learned that those kids will be in the Pathways Disciplinary Alternative Education Program for 15 days. Then they will be able to return to school and continue with their activities. For those of you who don't know, DAEP is considered the last step before suspension. You are not allowed on school property or at any school functions while you are enrolled in DAEP. When I was in HS, 4 years ago, if you got sent to DAEP, you were no longer able to participate in any activities until after the season ended, i.e. no football until off season, no marching band until after UIL, no theatre until after UIL, etc. These kids get 15 days which is less time than all of the other kids who are in for cussing out a teacher, which is the lightest offense, and after they're finished with their time, they will be returning to football practice. I don't care how important football is to this town, this is bullshit. There's no reason why anyone should get away with this without jailtime and lots of other things. The District says they punish bullying to the fullest extent of the law, but brutally beating a kid their own age is only worth 15 days in a glorified detention.

If I'm overreacting, please let me know, but this infuriates me. Makes me want to start studying to homeschool Auran. Not because of what the kids will do, but what the authoritating adults will fail to do.

I don't think you are over reacting. This shit is retarded.

This is why I can't stand high school kids now a days.

But here, its different. It's the high school kids that think they are cool b/c their richass parents buy them anything they want, including a brand new car.

Then they flaunt all of it. Drives me nuts.

Get a fucking job and work for your shit.

Back in my high school days, all the freshman were hazed in a process they called "Froshing". But it wasn't anything really dangerous or incriminating. Basically, the juniors and seniors grabbed the freshman and wrote "FROSH" on our foreheads or faces, and there really was no harm done. However, the year after I was a freshman, this was completely abolished. And it really surprises me that these kids don't get more of a punishment for physically injuring a fellow student.

You know what the problem REALLY is? The fact that schools nowadays focus WAY too much on sports. As far as I was concerned, school is about learning, not playing football, and student's rights should be upheld above a winning season. I see it in colleges all the time.

I was always a good student, and I sure as hell had the grades to back it up. I busted my ass to do well in school so that I could get into a good college, and it KILLS me to know that stupid kids got into the same school because they play sports. It kills me that idiots get into schools like Harvard and Yale (and are given perks!) because they're good football players. And it KILLS me to know that I'm struggling right now to find a job to pay back my HUGE student loan debt, while they all get a free ride and will ultimately amount to almost nothing anyway.

But for fear of getting even more angry than I am now (and my blood is boiling) I'm going to stop. I really just think that school need to focus on SCHOOL.

Eh i know they hazed the freshman football kids at my HS. I don't remember exactly what they did but I think it was something like they had them put on all of their pads and all of the upper classmen tackled the hell out of them.

And also... the kids do stupid drugs these days. A guy I went to HS with does some subbing at our old HS and he said they do all sorts of stupid brain damaging things for a high. I remember when all we did was just smoke herb.

There was no hazing in AZ schools...Mainly because a good 25% of the freshman class was packing...Not underwear or fudge either.

Nope, not overreacting at all. Fifteen days is insufficient punishment for that kind of action. A full year's suspension is closer to the mark, in my opinion. You know, since we're supposed to be teaching people how to behave responsibly in the adult world as well? If this is a short sentence because there are football or sport-types involved, it'll be another case of athletics trumping all, something that should stop immediately.

And I'm not bitter because our high school had a separate athletic budget. Not at all. Regardless of who you are, if you beat on someone, you should suffer the consequences of that action.

Atleast they're getting something! There were two boys not long ago somewhere around Texas I think. They thought it would be fun to put a deer decoy (stolen) in the middle of the road and watch people swerve around it. One guy is now permanently in a wheel-chair. Their punishment? Community service. After the football season is over of course. They should be thrown off the team and have to atleast spend time in Juvi.
