Mods - I felt like this was an actual issue to be discussed here rather than anywhere else on the boards, but if you think this should be included in the Borat movie thread, then by all means please move it there.
Apparently, Borat caused more controversey than I had initially thought. Apparently, the people that appeared in the film did not know that they were being put into an American comedy, and now some of them are angry and seeking legal recourse. You can read the article here:

The major claim is that they agreed to be in a documentary, and didn't know that it was going to be an actual American comedy film. And now that Borat has become a huge success and made lots of money, they want a piece of the action.
Do you guys think they have a case? |

Even thoughthey did not read the contract they still signed it, so I don't think they have a case, or well much of one. |

I agree. If you accepted $500 and just signed something without reading it, then you have no right to complain or ask for anything else. |

I really have no sympathy for these people in the movie and who are now trying to sue. |

Always read your contracts. I'm sorry - but I wouldn't be distracted with $150, $500, etc. to sign something that would put me in a film.
Most of the time people are so hungry for their "15 minutes" that they'll do it regardless.
If anything, maybe they get a little more compensations but certainly not an amount that would really make it all worth it. |

They'll no doubt pay the kids something. Hell right now its more publicity for Borat, people that haven't seen it will WANT to go see it now to see what happened with these kids. |

I'd say that some may have a case based on the claim that they were lied to about the content, production, and intent of the film - intentionally misrepresenting the intent of a contract, while attempting to distract them from reading it (in the one case, it appears that filming began before the release was signed) can be argued to not allow for informed consent. Without informed consent, a contract is worthless. The Behars might have a defamation case because of the whole "superimposed cockroaches" bit. |

With all the terroristic threats going on now, I question the driving instructor for just giving Borat driving lessons without appearing to check his credentials as being a legitimate LEGAL immigrant.
Remember, many of the terrorists received flying lessons in the US.
You can't tell me they had fake papers for him, or else that's just seriously wrong and probably illegal. |
