This is one of NCSofts newest games to recently hit beta testing, and with the little bit of time I've put into it I wasn't impressed. Generic dungeon crawler, just as the name suggests, and about 10 years too late for being a good looking game.
Two main complaints:
1. With access to much better engins, I shouldn't have to be looking at something that looks like something my dog left behind.
2. No matter how much tweaking I did, I couldn't read the text on the screen. Makes it kind of hard to know what your quest involves.
I dunno if anyone else around here got invited to the beta test, I didn't even request it, but found the invitation sitting in my inbox regardless. I hope they give me the same curtesy with some of their more promising looking titles. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this going to be one of the four MMO games that NCSoft was planning on distributing for free? Free as in... well, freeware? Or was it just a free subscription? I don't recall.
I'm certainly willing to look past a ton of flaws if I'm not paying for it.
I wonder if NCSoft is funneling jr developers through these projects.
Sadly, I didn't get invited. Probably since I cancelled my CoH account a long time ago. Prior to that, I got invites to other titles all the time. I signed up though and am hoping to get in on the open beta action.
Keep us posted if you keep playing the game, BK. I'm anxious to hear more. |

I think it's a free subscription game, not a freeware game; but I dunno. If you look at some of the other titles on the list (Exteel being a good example) you see the NCSoft quality graphics. |

Exteel looks like it uses the CoH/CoV engin, which is why it's on my watch list.
I'm not finding any deffinate word as to Dungeon Runners being freeware. If it is, then that's a plus.
Had my first running around in circles today, followed by my first death. Still getting used to the movement and combat system. |

Just saw some reviews for this game and I may give it a shot. Especially now that I have a better laptop.
The game is free and there is no monthly fee (sorta).
1up wrote: | Finally, and not at all least importantly, it costs exactly jack to play. Sure, it's pretty obviously positioned as a gateway drug to NCSoft's PlayNC service, but having other games tangentially pitched at you by the launcher doesn't lose it any points. The free service is somewhat limited in that you can't equip the rarer items in the game or stack potions, but the game isn't less playable for that. If you like, there's a $5 monthly subscription that gives complete access to anything. (Free download available at www.dungeonrunners.com.)
Not that Dungeon Runners is perfect. At the moment there's only room for one character per account. Not a huge deal if you're playing for free: You can just set up a second one, and if you want to try another character build you can completely respec your character on the fly at any time. But if you want another guy on your paid account so you can run with some friends at a lower level, at the moment you're S.O.L. NCSoft plans on adding it later, but later isn't now. Also, there's no trading system in place other than dropping stuff on the ground, and no way to exchange cash. This at least seems to be deliberate, if perhaps misguided.
With no cost for the game itself and a subscription cost about the price of a single gallon of gas, Dungeon Runners has a pretty nice cost-reward ratio going for it. There's no reason not to at least give it a crack, and they'll probably refund your $0 if it doesn't do anything for you. |
So if anything, you play for free until you get some of the rarer stuff. Then if you like it, you pay and go to town with your new stuff.
Kinda reminds me of what Penny Arcade said about Hellgate London
I'm always up for a good dungeon crawler. Anyone else?
Sciler... that's your cue! |

I am in beta, or was, for Exteel and it's not what you might think it is. It's more of a Battlefield type game but in 3rd person. The games are made in rooms, just like Battlefield or UT and you just go and kill other players for money. Then you can upgrade your mech with the money you made.
I just downloaded DR though, I havent installed it. It is a free game, free download, free gameplay, but if you want you can pay $4.99 a month for priority on the servers and a 160 slot bank to store your loot.
I also just got into the Sword Of The New World beta. Havent installed it either, so I dont know how it plays, but it looks pretty good. |
