I just watched the first 5 eps of this series and I like it. It doesn't have the mucho corniness of DBZ or Ranma (boy, am I dating myself there!) and the thing I most like is the dialogue and feel. The game is an offline simulated MMORPG and the series reflects that. They have related terms (Noob, etc) and make constant comments reflecting to playing the game so that you can tell the characters are being played by people sitting at their computers. It's kinda cool.
As an anime, the story is kinda cliche (search for the (___fill in the blank___)) but that's what most MMORPGs are anyway. I'd recommend it to any anime watcher and RPGer. It may not grab you but you'll be able to see the wit and intelligence behind it. I'm gonna go play the game series now! |

.Hack is a beautiful experience. I say experience because you -must- involve yourself in the story in all it's mediums (manga, anime, games, books). It's an experience. I loved .Hack Sign, Legend of the Twilight is good too but more of a lighthearted campy experience. I'm looking forward to the new anime series .Hack//Roots which takes place before the GU games.
AI Buster (Book)->Parts of AI Buster 2 (Book) -> .Hack//Sign(Anime) -> .Hack Games/OVA/Another Birth Novels ->Rest of AI Buster 2 (Book)->Legend of Twilight (Anime/Manga) ->.Hack//Roots (Anime) ->.Hack//GU (Game)
Legend of Twilight Manga and Anime are almost completely different stories, similar concepts but different stories. |

.hack really is an experience - significant parts of the story are hidden in each of the various media that it's been published in. without carrying all of them together, it's likely that something won't make complete sense. The problem is that we keep getting bits and pieces scattered about the timeline. Anyone who wants to start from the beginning may have to wait until it's all done. |
