So all of a sudden, there's all this talk about "lock bumping". What is that? Basically, all you need is a key of the right type and a few seconds, and you can open almost any usual lock you come across. Not even the expensive super-strength locks can counter bumpers. I won't go into the details, out of principle - you'll see exactly why below.
So the news hear of lock bumping.
So what do the news do?
They make a report about it.
...And broadcast on TV how to perform lock bumping.
Congratulations, assholes! You've just taught all of North America how to get past locks! Bravo. Bra-fucking-vo. What used to be a cryptically explained article on Wikipedia found only by those who explicitly research into the subject has just now been made available to the stupid mass of humanity.
If we were to have a FUBU of self-defeatism, we sure as hell found it. |

Yet again, another fine example of how the news actually makes matters even worse for the public.
Reminds me of the recent rehash the news has done over the various pharmacies in how they do, or do not follow the new rules on cold medicine....and show you what household items you need to make meth! Baka ^Nth+1 |

There's a reason why, in some circles of the blogosphere, the acronym "MSM" (Main Stream Media) is considered a swear word. Sort of like the New York Times blowing the cover on a classified monitoring program that was operating within legal limits, not being abused, and was reasonably successful at tracking funds being delivered to terrorist organizations.
ADDENDUM: Or that same fine paragon of journalism giving the name of a KIA in Iraq before the DOD had a chance to notify the family... |

If it is, it's sophomoric at best. It really seems that a lot of media outlets these days make these reports because they think they're Doing The Right Thing™...
I wouldn't go so far as to say they've given "evil" power. Those who actively desire to defeat a lock already knew how before the media reported it. What they've done is hand a lock-picking technique to any idle mind that might think it's cool to pop open someone's door and freak them out. Then again, Wikipedia has an explanation of how lock bumping works, and a decent set of bump keys can be bought online for under $50.
On the other hand, Security Through Obscurity is worthless, and for standard pin tumbler locks, it's fairly simple to cut your own master key. |
