HELP (me to make decision)

Okay, here's the deal.

Max has a last-generation iBook, and has found a last-generation iMac for $400 (note that both predate dual-booting by 1 generation). Since I need a new computer (my laptop is about to DIE) he suggested giving me his iBook and buying the desktop. I've been trying to decide whether to save up and get an iBook or a PC laptop, but here's a chance for me to have a mac laptop for $400. I'm still a little hung up on getting a PC laptop, although I am horribly afraid of Vista and I know how bad windows is in general.

Should I do eet? :D

I'm not going to vote yet, but it really depends on what you want to do with it. Is saving up for a NEW Mac not an option?

If you're going to use it for games and other applications, I would say PC, but if you are doing this for an artistic focus and want something that's going to do a damn good job with photoshop... Mac is the way to go.

If I had the choice between buying an old iMac and saving for a new PC, I would go with PC. But, again, is buying a new Mac out of the question?

Well, I was going to save up and get either a mac or pc, I just hadn't made a decision over which. Or we could get the iMac for Max, which is his ideal computer because it's a desktop (which he's been wanting) and it has a larger hardrive and only slightly less ram (a gig, while his laptop has a gig and 1/4; the processor is also marginally less powerful).

Logic tells me that I'm an artist, and Macs have less problems than pcs, etc. I won't be using it for gaming. But there's part of me that's still hung up on the notion of getting a PC, for some reason.

also, these aren't "old" old computers (the iBook Max has and the iMac we're thinking about), they're just last gen.

Well current gen intel Macs can dual boot Mac OSX and Windows right... I would go with that if possible.

I'm not a huge Mac fan in the first place. I like the upgradeability of the PC's. If it's affordability you're after (as unthinkable as it sounds) Wal-mart has PC's starting at $498. Akila just got a Toshiba laptop with a 1.6 G processor, 100 G hard drive, 1 G of RAM and all sorts of other goodies for like $530 and couldn't be happier with it. I had (until recently) a 7 year old Dell lappy that I had upgraded a couple of times that could run Photoshop and run just as fast as a lot of newer computers. I quit using Macs a long time ago. Maybe they've gotten better since then. I don't know.

Apperently the newest Mac OS runs on almost any x86 system.

So really the question is why platform do you want?

I'd save up for a new mac, like, ''not even out yet'' gen of mac. They are THAT close to pwn PC world anyway. (just give them a lil more time, it's coming ... o yes it's coming)

Hmmm. This is hard :B Logic tells me to save up and get a dual-booting mac. But my current computer is knockin' on death's door :B

Kudasai--I don't shop at walmart ^^; that PC sounds very suspect. Usually, generally, if a deal is too good to be true, then it probably is :B
