I ran across something odd yesterday in my garden. I was putting in some new plants and while filling the dirt back in, I noticed this little white thing that was shaped like an egg.

I made a point to set it aside to check it out since I thought it was an odd shape...but just one of those little foam pieces that you find in potting soils...

So, I picked it up to look at it, saw it was really soft, so I just thought my suspicions were right...until I squezzed it a little too hard and it burst in my face!!! So Gross!!!

Now Dloe has me scared that I've got snakes in my garden and now I'm afraid to dig around there again. It was a tiny little egg...normal egg-shape...but not even big enough to cover my pinky fingernail.

Could it have come from a lizard? I can deal w/ a lizard. My last encounter w/ a snake was last year, when I was digging up some bushes...and I felt something drop at my feet. It was a headless baby Copperhead...that had to have been dropped by a bird...being the lack of head. What kind of reptile would come from such an itty bitty egg?

I don't think there are any lizards in GA big enough for that. o.O It could've been a snake, though.....but, since snakes don't live in GA, maybe it's a...a...hummingbird egg! Yeah! Hummingbirds are tiny!

Edit: Actually, now I think on it, most snakes have fairly good sized eggs. It could probably have been a lizard one if it was that tiny.

I'm trying to convince myself that it wasn't a snake egg...it just looked too small for a snake. But it was a soft shell so I don't think it was a bird egg even though it was a totally normal egg shape and white in color...it hardly looked real.

I'm just all creeped out now.

It really depends on the type of snake, I can honestly tell you that if it is indeed a snake it's not anything poisoness , probably a harmless garder snake. Most venomous snake eggs are either half the size of the human thumb at smallest and golf ball size at largest. So relax

Lizard eggs are very small if you squeeze your pinky at the tip you got the basic size of an lizard egg, and they are usually extremely soft and oval shaped.

I would say you are looking at an anole lizard, commonly seen anywhere. ^_^ I use to have hundreds of them and catch them all the time, I have a picture somewhere, where I have six anoles in one hand and an iguana on my sholder. XD

Relax you are good.

Maybe it is just a lizard...it was about that pinky size you described...i think i can deal w/ a garter snake too...I've seen those before on my mom's patio.

Its a good garden for wildlife...lots for flowers and birds. The bugs don't even bother to mess w/ me b/c they're too busy eating. lol

I currently have a veggie jungle out there too since I kinda misjudged on the spacing.

more than likely it's an anole lizard egg. ^_^ if indeed it is the size i described. So you can relax, most grder snake eggs are usually to the firstring indention on your pinky in length, and a little hard. So yeah I'd say a small anole lizard. They are fun to watch as soon as they see a person they will usually turn one eye to look at you, like giving a suspicious look. XD funneh!

that too is a probability. ^_^ but if it burst on you, then i say it was a small anole egg, if you are worried you will run across one, don't they usually scatter after they hear something, and retreat to a higher area, they love rosemary bushes.

It could be opheodrys aestivus, which have been known to lay eggs in soil and are found throughout the southeastern US. They're very common, but they're totally harmless. I would even go so far as to call them friendly; those I have encountered in the wild handle very well.

..sorry, I'm a snake geek. >>
