Ok, so I thought we needed a rant thread. If there's one, sorry, but I dont have time to find it.

Anyhow, I got an email yesterday saying...

To: *P** - All PMI Employees
Subject: Computer and Internet Usage Reminder
Here’s an excerpt from our employee handbook:

“The Company’s connection to the Internet is principally for work-related purposes. Unauthorized use of the Internet is prohibited. Unauthorized uses include (among others) posting, viewing, downloading or otherwise receiving or transmitting offensive, defamatory, pornographic or sexually explicit material; engaging in computer “hacking” or other related activities; attempting to disable or compromise the security of information on any computer, playing games or other frivolous uses, and any use for illegal purposes. Use of the company Internet connection for personal business use should be rare and brief. Unauthorized use and excessive or inappropriate personal business use of the Company’s Internet connection are subject to disciplinary action.”

In the past few weeks we have had some inappropriate computer usage and for this reason we have taken some disciplinary actions.

If the inappropriate use of the computers and internet access continues, more drastic actions may be taken including severely limiting outside access through the internet. We would prefer not to inconvenience everyone over a problem created by a few people, so please keep your computer use within our policy.

Now I get an email saying...

Just a reminder - this applies to instant messenger conversations as well...

What the...?! Come on! Are robots here? Do we have to just sit here and stare at a computer for 8 hours without socializing? Geezuz!

Next thing we know they're gonna tell us to use our work emails as our MSN contact and their gonna tie us to the chair and brainwash us and I dont know why I can hear lobotomy in the back of my head! GAH! This is starting to suck majorly! I think Im gonna start looking for a more flexible job... or Not... but Im considering it!

My company has the same policy. Obviously I have more common sense than to use my internet for inappropriate things, but they have to be joking when they say you can't use it for ANYTHING non work related. I either finish my work very quickly, or don't have anything else to do while waiting for something for whatever reason, and I honestly don't feel like sitting here staring at my cubicle wall.

Here here!

My work has 'net access, but it's a retail store, so I'm too busy doing SOMETHING to be misbehaving on the internets. XD

I once got reprimanded for buying something on ebay while I was at work...but they weren't too harsh about it...just kind of warning me about time and such...

but not being able to IM sounds a little ludacris...are they really serious about cracking down on that?

If a company believes that the work available to all their employees is enough that they don't have free time to surf with, they're kidding themselves. So long as it's not doing illegal or embarrassing things, or taking up lots of bandwidth, it should probably be permitted. OF course, if they really want to fix that kind of problem, all they have to do is uninstall Java and Flash. That it would break several important websites is an unfortunate side effect, but without Java and Flash, you can be reasonably assured that people aren't going to be using the company Internet for personal things.

"Policy reminders" like that generally signal to me that someone got busted and everyone's going to suffer under increased watching for a while, and then so long as nobody's stupid enough to get busted again, things will return to normal.

Well, you HAVE to be on MSN while at work. I just cant believe they are bitching about it too. When I 1st started they said, "You have to be at MSN as long as you are on the clock. Some people use their work email account as the MSN contact, some use their personal. Either is fine." Now it seems like they made a mistake letting people use their personal account. We'll see what happens.

So far, I chat with Gaaz, Shino and other friends everyday throughout the whole day and have no problem. So we'll see what happens.

Oh well...

BTW, you guys can rant in this thread about your stuff too! That's why I made it! Razz

And on that topic! Shino!! Let me know when you move threads! I thought you deleted it! Razz

My work just has firewalls all over the place to where I just have to find out my trial and error what sites I can access. I guess they don't know about PO ...yet...but they blocked off Gaia after I accessed it for prolly 2 years. Certain quiz sites are blocked. We are blocked for all outside email systems like MSN, Yahoo, and Hotmail. And we are not supposed to use IM...but everyone knows the firewall setting to get around it.

They've gone as far as to send an email out to remove IM...but I deceided to read through the lines on that one since it said if you "downloaded it onto your computer". Hehe, I downloaded it onto my old laptop...but got it on this one when IT upgraded me Rolling Eyes

Nothing will apparantly happen to us if we access something inappropriate since they firewall us away from everything...and there;s really no one who can complain about me surfing since they'd have really actually care to begin with and take the time to both report and look up who I am and my manager. No one has time for that...

Edit:
Almost forgot the really funny one we can't access anymore....they blocked YouTube!...and they give you full access to Amazon and Ebay...but can get fired for using it.

I would totally be on PO and IMs at work if it weren't for the five deadlines fast approaching and the customer on line three...

Sure you're company would rather you be bored in your off time than chat, but at least you have off-time in which to be bored.

Of course, as stressful as it sounds, I sure wouldn't trade it for a big-corp cubicle job.

My company blocks as muchas it can. They finally blocked my email with doteasy.com lol. Ah well, I forgot to check if PO finally got blocked, probably did. Evidently, since we do have such high importance information on most of our PCs and in our Database, personal information on hundreds and hundreds of people, they are more worried about getting a virus and having all that vital information leaked, than anything else. We have a lot of computer stupid people at our office, that would get into something stupid because something said "CLICK HERE AND WIN!!!!". -_- Thanks retards for ruining my internet joys at work.

And IMs are a no no too. I wish I could use them. T_T
