Powerful Typhoon Hits Southern Japan

By CHISAKI WATANABE
Associated Press Writer

TOKYO (AP) -- A powerful typhoon hit southern Japan on Thursday, injuring at least five people, disrupting traffic and drenching a wide region.

Typhoon Usagi was moving north of Miyazaki city on Japan's southern island of Kyushu as of early Thursday evening, with maximum sustained winds of 89 miles per hour, the Japan Meteorological Agency said in a statement.

Five people have been injured - including four seriously - in Miyazaki state, according to local official Shiro Hamasuna.

Usagi, which means "rabbit" in Japanese, was moving north-northwest and expected to hit the Kyushu and Shikoku islands later in the day, the agency said.

The agency warned of heavy rains, high waves and strong winds.

The typhoon forced airline companies to cancel more than 140 flights. Japan Airlines Corp. and its subsidiary grounded 79 flights, affecting about 3,800 passengers, according to company spokeswoman Yumi Iwashita.

All Nippon Airways Co. and its subsidiaries canceled 62 flights, affecting about 7,900 passengers, said company spokeswoman Keiko Ninomiya.

Ferry services also were suspended, public broadcaster NHK said.

About 28,500 homes in the typhoon-hit region were without power as of Thursday, according to Kyushu Electric Power Co.

Up to 14 inches of rain was forecast for some regions.

Typhoon Usagi struck Japan at about 06:00 GMT on 2 August. Data supplied by the US Navy and Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Center suggest that the point of landfall was near 32.0 N, 132.0 E. Usagi brought 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around 166 km/h (103 mph). Wind gusts in the area may have been considerably higher.

According to the Saffir-Simpson damage scale the potential property damage and flooding from a storm of Usagi's strength (category 2) at landfall includes:

Storm surge generally 1.8-2.4 metres (6-8 feet) above normal.
Some roofing material, door, and window damage of buildings.
Considerable damage to shrubbery and trees with some trees blown down.
Considerable damage to mobile homes, poorly constructed signs, and piers.
Coastal and low-lying escape routes flood 2-4 hours before arrival of the storm center.
Small craft in unprotected anchorages break moorings.
There is also the potential for flooding further inland due to heavy rain.

that is all I could find.

Thanks sciler for the concern! Since Im in Tokyo I'm more in the center of Japan so no worries. It's kind of sad though because okinawa and the southern islands got hit with (from what I can tell) an even worse typhoon several weekends ago. Hopefully there wont be any whether trouble this weekend since I'm flying home.

Typhoon Man-yi

TOKYO (Reuters) - A typhoon that killed three people and injured more than 70 in Japan weakened to a tropical storm on Sunday, as it brushed by Tokyo and headed for the Pacific Ocean bringing heavy rain, strong winds and landslides.

Man-yi moved east at 55 km per hour (34 mph) from Chiba, near Tokyo, after lashing Japan's eastern coastline from the southernmost main island of Kyushu on Saturday, the Meteorological Agency said.

The storm was weakening with winds of up to 126 km per hour (78 mph), but forecasters still warned of landslides after heavy rain pounded swathes of residential areas, forcing thousands to evacuate from homes.

Man-yi, which approached Japan's southern Okinawa islands late last week, has killed three people, including an 11-year-old boy swept away by a fast-moving river on Saturday while trying to pick up a ball.

One man was missing and 73 were injured, NHK television said.

Man-yi was classified as a tropical storm by British-based Web site Tropical Storm Risk (www.tropicalstormrisk.com), down from a category 1 typhoon on Saturday and category 4 on Friday.

Television footage showed high waves pounding the shoreline in Chiba, east of the capital, a while a landslide in the area flattened three houses.

Officials had advised thousands of households to evacuate and around 4,200 people fled to evacuation centers on their own.
