August 7, 2007 - Keep an eye on your Wii today as that sexy blue light will be blinking away to indicate there's a new firmware update to download. Time-piece fans can look forward to a nice digital clock for the main menu and some aesthetic changes to the Wii Shop.
If you're keeping count of your firmwares, this one is 3.0 and is available in Europe, Japan and the States right now. While most of the updates are fairly minor, they all help to make the overall Wii experience a little bit smoother and more user-friendly.
Changes include a digital clock on the Wii menu, the Forecast Channel displays the current weather in its little window, message board has a special "Today's Accomplishments" message to show what you've played and address book entries can be moved around with the Wii-mote.
Meanwhile, the Wii Shop has had a sleek makeover, which changes the way Virtual Console games are ordered. A new welcome screen now shows four recommended titles and then once inside the Shop there's a list of popular titles, the ability to search for a game, a genre category and a category that organizes entries by the original publisher.
However, if you've illegally modded your Wii to play import games or copied titles then be warned. Before you update your firmware a message from Nintendo reads: "If your Wii console has an unautorized technical modification, this upgrade could cause inoperability of your console." Looks like Nintendo is clamping down on modders.
Looks like those modded Wiis might go boom. Glad I didn't have mine done. |

erm, didn't this go up Tuesday? As I was reading stuff about it yesterday, it seemed modded systems haven't been affected but it is blocking out Freeloaders. |

Yeah the update went out Tuesday. Didn't know about the anti-mod message though.
Mine's not modded so I had no problem. |

I wonder when Nintendo is coming out with a good firmware update to better the friend list! The whole thing of having friend codes for every game seems stupid. |

I doubt that'll ever happen, besides I can't see how the 360 friendslist could be better to be honest. |

I gotta chime in here. While I am not that excited about the whole friendlist idea I do see where it serves it's purpose. Try playing Madden and having 5+ games in a row of people disconnecting in the fourth qtr because they're gonna lose and you'll agree. Wasting 4-5 hours of my day trying to find a decent game isn't my idea of fun. At least if you know the person you're playing there's a lesser chance of poor sportsmanship occurring.
That said, I feel each game should include both random and friendcode game-ability. I've always been more about choice than anything else. Pokemon battle Revolution is a small step in the right direction (as you do have both choices) but the game itself is too limited.
And while I don't know all of the ins and outs of XBL, I am sure Nin has a ways to go before they achieve anything close to approaching that level. |
