Ok...I'm a film major, so I need to discuss this.

I was happy that I was able to peg Best Movie and Best Lead Actor.

Anywho...what did everyone think? Did everyone love this years media-engorgement?

PS: Coen Bros. FTW

Well I feel bad I tanked out after their tribute to all who were lost this year. Rina can't stay up so late anymore.

I was so happy Tilda Swinton got an Oscar for supporting actress. She's an absolutely phenomenal actress that many only have been introduced to via The Lion, the Withc and the Wardrobe (the White Witch) or Constantine (Gabriel) but I've been a fan of hers since Orlando (1992) - stunning film.

Javier Bardem was amazing in No Country for Old Men so I feel his Oscar was well deserved. He's FAR more sexy in real life than in that film. Actually, I think it's because he scared the piss out of me in that movie.

The thing I liked so much is there was a good bit of variety so it wasn't like one film swept everything (Aside from No country for Old Men - well deserved - and the love affair for Bourne Ultimatum in sound editing, etc). Sweeney Todd for Art Direction (well deserved).

I loved that Once won for Best Song. And how classy was it for Jon Stewart to bring Marketa Irglova out so she could say her thanks!

Marion Cotillard for La Vie en Rose winning Best Actress was incredible. You can tell she really switched up channels to play Edith Piaf. Quite amazing.

I'm happy to hear Diablo Cody won for Juno Best Screenplay. It truly was a touching story and well worth the nod.

Demon angel

I wish I'd seen more of the movies that were up for Oscars this year. I felt so unprepared unlike other years. I do think the best lead actor category could have gone any way, I was really pulling for Johnny Depp or Tommy Lee Jones.

Diablo Cody seems to be the new oncoming face of Hollywood. And while I have problems with Juno, I do think it is an incredibly well written story. I hope this gives her some clout to keep writing stories she wants to do.

I missed it due to church. I don't pick up channels here in the apartment anyways.

Looking through the list of winners, it looks like it was a good year for the Academy. It's nice to see Johnny Depp getting some nominations finally, though he may end up like Blake Edwards and "just" taking home a lifetime achievement award later on (more respectable award in my opinion).

I missed it due to not caring about anything/one that was up for nomination. xDD

But, I did have a look online, and it looks like a couple of things I at least was familiar with won some stuff (IE: Golden Compass) which is pretty cool.

Apparently you weren't the only one. I've heard a few times on the news that the ratings were pretty bad this year. Someone commented that it may have something to do with the fact that a lot of the movies nominated, while very critically acclaimed, did pretty poorly at the box office.

Johnny Depp has been nominated before:

Pirates in 2003 - beat out by Sean Penn in Mystic River
Finding Neverland in 2004 - beat out by Jamie Foxx for Ray

Yeah, I remembered those; what I meant was that it's nice to see Depp getting these recent recognitions for his talent after 2 decades of acting.

Granted, Sean Penn had to wait just as long and there are still others out there.

I'm hoping the ratings continue to go down to the point the Academy is dissolved.

I don't care how many gold statuettes you award some person if they play a part in a crappy movie it's still a crappy movie. I've never been motivated to see a flick just because the deep voice guy said "Nominated for best actor and winner of best performance in a film featuring bestiality <Random Actor> is Japeth McMichaelson...A story about a man that drinks a lot and beats his wife and one day realizes he has two hands for drinking and beating."

What is the point of the Academy other than to basically tell everyone everywhere that the movie they loved last year was crap and this movie here that you had no interest in was golden. Razz

Day of the Dead comes out in 2008 but I bet Romero don't get no best Zombie movie award. >_>
