Don't know if anyones seen this, but it seems Jeff Gertsmann has been fired by CNET after advertiser pressure from Eidos due to his 6.0 score and negative video review of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men.
Ignoring the fact that its been getting similar scores across the board. This is downright disgusting, if not at all suprising after recent events.
It was only last week that Mike Krahulik from Penny Arcade claimed certain corporate websites were taking what can only be described as bungs exchange for positive reviews. Take out the little tiff thats now going on between Krahulik and one of IGN's writers, its was kind of obvious something was going on behind the scenes.
Even so, this is downright disgusting behaviour from CNET, and although we have no proof as to this being why he has been fired, CNET are now starting to see a slight leak of writers leaving their jobs so soon after this incident has happened.
Personally, I've never trusted sites such as Gamespot, 1up or IGN for their opinions, I usually stick to smaller, lesser known sites, or even better peoples opinions on communities that I'm a member of "so here, Now Loading, GamesTM's Forum and The Society) whilst taking reviews from publications such as EDGE and GamesTM with a pinch of salt. |

The problem is that you sorta need reviews to make game purchases.
You could rent the game I guess but I hate renting games and movies for some reason...Mainly cause I pay money to rent something then never find time to play/watch it.
So I've taken to hacking my systems DLing the games and buying what I like. hehehe
Granted, I'm kinda scared to mod the PS3 but by next week the Wii should be fully hacked. Mainly because I can play Japanese GC games and stop spending money on games that I don't like. |

I know this is a lot, but I'm trying to make a point.
Gamespot is just full of crap really. They don't do a good job of reviewing games anymore.
For instance... They put some guy who mostly reviews sports games and hasn't reviewed a platform game in about 3 years on the review for Ratchet and Clank. Out of 55 reviews on Gamerankings... 2... count them... 2 are below 8. Gamespot was one of them with a 7.5. The game currently sits at 89.0%
OK... so that's not such a big deal, but then when you compare the review from that to their review for Two Worlds. A game known to be flawed and down right horrible...
Gamerankings has 47 reviews posted for that... a total of 6 are ABOVE 7. One of them being Gamespot with a 7.5. THAT game is sitting at an average of 49.9%.
So they rated a game which others averaged out to be over a 9 the same as a game that others averaged out to be under a 5. What's wrong with that picture.
But wait... it gets worse... I've been playing a lot of Uncharted, which (without having played Mass Effect) is easily my game of the year this year. Gamespot gave it an 8. Which isn't bad... but it's the reason they gave it an 8 that bothers me...
Quote: |
The Good
* Lush jungle environments are stunningly realized
* Drake's animations are nuanced and naturalistic.
The Bad
* Tough and plentiful enemies can make firefights frustrating
* Platforming elements can be too forgiving
* Certain story elements are underdeveloped.
|
Frustrating fire fights? No... not so much. He must have just downright sucked at the game. Sure, the AI is pretty good and they take the same amount of damage as Drake... why does that deserve a place under "the bad." I don't think I've played the same fire fight more than 2 times.
By comparison.. the firefights are FAR less frustrating than some of them in Gears for instance... yet.. that game got no such point docking with its score of 9.6
Some of this crap is just bull$hit really.
Quote: | By comparison, the combat can be devilish at times in its difficulty. The combat consists mostly of gunplay, and you'll be brandishing a variety of handguns, assault rifles, shotguns, and grenade launchers over the course of the game. Nathan's a pretty fragile dude, and it takes only one or two shots before the color starts draining out of the screen, which makes it important to find and use cover intelligently. By comparison, the pirates and mercenaries that you'll face through most of the game are remarkably sturdy, and can regularly absorb half a clip before going down. Headshots help move things along, though oddly, we found pistols to be far more effective for this than anything other than the sniper rifle, even at several hundred yards.
Enemies are also pretty smart, and if you stay in one position for too long during a firefight, they'll flank you. Dealing with half a dozen cagey enemies who can take roughly as much damage as you isn't impossible, but it can often take multiple tries, which can be fist-clenchingly frustrating when dealing with wave after wave of enemies. There are portions of the game where it seems like you're just moving from one infuriating firefight to the next, and it creates a weird contrast to the easygoing platforming stuff. If you can get close enough to an enemy without getting perforated, which is a rarity, there's some simple hand-to-hand combat. It looks more dynamic than it really is in terms of gameplay, which is both a credit to how hard-hitting the fisticuffs look and a slight against their simplicity. |
So wait... having enemies that are about the same size and take the same amount of shots Drake does, and having them smart enough to take cover and flank you... makes this game LOSE POINTS!?! If anything it should have a HIGHER rating for making it more realistic in that regard! Oh look... 1/2 way intelligent AI. -.5 points! BS.
And you don't unload 1/2 a clip into an enemy. He must have really bad aim. Killing a normal sized enemy with the pistol takes 3 shots if one of them is not in the head. One of the fat guys takes 4 shots. Not sure where the 1/2 clip comes from. Maybe you waste rounds when the enemy is ducking and moving out of the way.
And the platforming is too forgiving? Well I can't say that I disagree with you, but what do you want... Another Tomb Raider 1. In reality, the game does different things based on the environment surrounding you. Just like you might do different things based on your environment. If the jump is short... I probably wouldn't TRY to jump as far. So basically you're docking the game again for Drake having some kind of AI as well.
Sorry... after reading the review for Uncharted... it's just bad. Gamespot has really lost their way.
I'm sure after playing Mass Effect I'll go back and look at their review for that and probably hate it just as much for giving it an 8.5. |

It's not just Gamespot though is it? I imagine all the big corporate sites have a slight advertising bias and have lower standards with their reviews to somewhewre other than say, bitparade ( ) where (despite our slower release rates) you know you'#re gonna be getting an actual honest opinion |

Oh I definitely agree with you there!
It's just Gamespot has been the most evident lately.
By the way... I pimped your site on the show. |
