Me complaining about my school. I love the school overall-- the atmosphere is great, the teachers (for the most part) are great, and all that jazz.

But they do like to screw me over.

I have six classes left to take. 4 of which are Writing classes that aren't my Internship. 1 of which may actually be offered this Fall. Out of those I have left, three of them are only offered during the Spring semester.

I'm a little peeved, needless to say. I need to talk to the secretary of my Department, but her office hours are all ridiculously early for me. I will of course be getting there at some point, but it's really frustrating to realize that I'm going to have to come in more than two hours before I have class just to talk to her, and then I'll have to stay, because gas prices are ridiculous and it'd be a waste to drive home and then drive back up....so it'll have to be a Wednesday, because she's only there Mondays and Wednesday and Mondays I have class until 10:00...which'd mean I'm at the school for literally 12 hours. I can't really eat at the school, so I'd be in really bad shape if I did that.

GRAWR.

But, on the plus side, the ticker in my signature's number keeps going lower and lower, and there is nothing that could make me happier than that right now.

Other than, y'know, my sister finally having her baby and going back on her medication so she'll stop being a raging inferno of evil hatred and go back to being a small inferno of slight hatred as usual. xD

I should be graduating this semester, but 2 out of the 3 classes I need start at 1 pm, and I cannot take them since I work normal business hours.

I won't be able to take the classes until Fall Semester which irks me since I just want to get done and move on. Also, when I graduate I get a promotion and a raise so I kinda want to graduate ASAP for that reason also.

XD They offered two of the three I need this semester, but at the same time as each other and one of my other classes.

You'd think they'd use the Plans of Study they make us all write to, y'know, make sure the classes are available for us? But no, that'd make too much sense.

I hate that most of the senior level classes will only come up every other semester, and they will only have one session of the class. So if you cannot take that class at the specified time then it is tough shit.

SPSU supposely caters to the "working stiff" crowd, and have more classes in the evenings, but I'm finding more and more high level classes are showing up in the late morning/early afternoon, and the administraton basically told me tough shit.

It is almost as if they discourage their students from working and take out tons of student loans to get into horrible debt. If they do not offer evening classes for the Senior Project and Testing & QA in Fall in the evening time then I swear I'm either going to have to lose my job to finish school which would make me want to turn all the school's networking equipment into door stops...

You know, I think all schools are designed to put the screws to their students.

My department used to ask us what classes and scheduling we wanted and were looking for but it all fell in the on the professors. The TCOM dept @ SPSU was so small, and still is, that the staff is too limited to certain courses and are just not qualified to teach some of the classes we wanted at that particular time...Professor BlagBlah had to teach it, and they only teach on these days and times...

It took me an extra semester just to get out, and that was with the flexibility of being able to just pick any class I wanted within a certain course number range.

Its really just ridiculous how they do things and there's not a thing you can do to stop it or change it.

Exactly. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and do things the only way that you can. You have to inconvenience yourself, but that's just that way it goes, and I don't see any need to complain because everyone's had to do it at some point. I had to minor in something completely different than what I originally wanted to minor in because, at the time, they didn't offer any of the classes that I needed to take. Or there was the glitch in the financial aid system that locked me out of registering for classes for a few days, so I didn't get the classes/times that I wanted. And they're response was basically, "Oh, my bad. See you next semester!" The institution is much bigger than you are, so it's not about to bend over backwards for you.

Link left school mid-November. He got a job working with teh school's tech support dept, which is cool and all, but he just found out in the last couple weeks that while he had been TOLD that he had been closed out in the school's systems, he was still listed as an active student.

This is on top of the fact that they had told him that he owed like $700 dollars, and then when he went in November to have the financial dept sign off on his paperwork, he had overpaid by like 500.

Or when they told him that he qualified for a scholarship, and then told him a few months later that he didn't actually qualify for it. >.<

Bend over backwards?! If any institution that I pay money to fucks up then I expect them to fix it... One of the reasons that I'm the situation that I am in is because they delayed offically changing my major over from CS to SWE for a semester. The problem is that between those semesters, they changed the Software Engineering program from a programming/math orientation to more of a architectural/business orientation.

Because of that "oops" it cost me 25 credit hours, fifteen thousand dollars in tuition, I cannot advance in my career, and I cannot pursue personal projects. If it was a private institution I can sue them or otherwise demand FAR more accountability out of them. If I were to make that sort of mistake in any job that I have had in the past, I would be fired... AT BEST for such negligence, incompentence, and malice.

So forgive me if I have a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth about the public university system. Any institution where there is minimal transparency, accountability or drive for anything other than mediocre just plain pisses me off. Espicially given the fact that I HAVE to deal with them in order to get a piece of paper that says I'm not a fucking moron, and be able to pursue a career that does not involve bottom rung IT, flipping burgers, or swinging a hammer.

honestly, looking at everyone's horror stories from this stuff, I don't know how I managed to pull off two majors in 4 years. Unfortunately, there are loans to deal with, but i'll see what happens.

Also, I have to say that the Film Department at Fairfield is intelligent in their registrations and programs. The only problems come in the form of meeting the department head so i can get my Independant Study signed off. He said call him, and I've left him SEVERAL messages, and he won't call me back. And I can't yell at him, because he's a PRIEST. grr...

Oh well. Onward and forward. I don't know how I dodged bullet after bullet, but good luck with everything Shan. If i can give you advice, its this: If it's just meeting with a secretary in the morning, get up, get it over with, and be done with it. The reason why I've gotten through annoying crap at school is because when something is about to go wrong, I get all over it like flies on a hot steamy piece of poo. So head in, have a big smile on your face, and thank everyone on the way out.

After you leave, press the detonator and watch it burn. Very Happy
