http://news.aol.com/story/_a/father-mad-as-hell-over-filthy-barracks/20080429092409990002
first off I want to apologize.. I hope you can make sense of this.. I'm more than a bit pissed so my typing my be jumbled.
What the Hell?! Now.. I know that our people go through a hell of a lot.. things I probably can't even fathom ...and most of the time they aren't coddled and have be able to go though rough conditions. But being Promised something for 3 years.. each time before going off on missions... something which could have possibly made them feel a little bit better, thinking about when they we're away, was never given....... now I understand delays.. sometimes things happen but DAMN! 3 years!? ... and that place is not safe no matter how you look at it. .. mold like that is dangerous .. not to mention unsanitary! Now.. unless I'm wrong.. I think the men have to clean up their own living space.. which is understandable.. and a thought occurred to me , perhaps the men themselves could have fixed it up... but by the looks of it those barracks were in rough conditions long before that company moved into them......they shouldn't have to fix up -that- God awful mess!! Especially when they sure as hell don't get payed enough in the first place.. and from the looks of it the job would require being -completely- gutted and redone.. it would be better just to build new barracks like was promised to them.
Now I'm no idiot.. maybe they couldn't have built new one for what ever reason.. but at -least- they could have fixed up the old one! These men risk their lives for freedom... and they get treated like this?! God it makes me sick.... Following orders without question or complaint, isolating themselves, being cut off from everything they know and love in order to protect it.
The brave men and women are risking their lives for us.. willing to die for the beliefs we hold so dear and often abuse ...By God the least we can fuck'n do is provide them with a save environment to come home to!
God solider boys.. they seem to be some of the few decent, honorable people left...
I would also like to apologize to these poor men... and anyone else who's been snubbed like this.. I'd be right there with you if I could... but certain limitations permit me from even getting a desk job in any branch of the armed forces. |

You don't have to apologize. The people in charge that would rather spend money on having the lines in the parking lots repainted, or something stupid and menial like that should apologize. Believe it or not I've seen living conditions as bad if not worse on other military installations. The Department of Defence spends all of it's budget on weapons and vehicles uniforms and personal protective equipment (thank god for that one!) instead of setting some aside to repair or replace aging barracks. Now, I know for a fact that most Army posts have gone to privatized housing companies to maintain their family housing and a few have turned over barracks maintenance to private compainies too. There are nine Army posts that I know of that are currently building new barracks or refurbishing the existing ones. In the case of this Soldier's barracks, it is either a failure on their part to report these deficiencies to the proper authorities or their command's failure to do anything about it.
On another note, thank you for all the nice words. With being hated around the world it's nice to know some people still like us! |

Yup, we've had to stop everything we were doing so we could fix up our barracks before he gets here. |

Well, this father did, in my opinion, the right thing. He brought it straight up to the best part of the media - youtube.
I have to say, seeing that makes me unhappy. I know enough people that have served time, or are going to serve time, and the fact that they have to live in a place like that is horrible. I hope something is done. I'll even try to do my own to help. |

Makes me wonder how much of the money spent on defense contracts is really graft or wasted. The barracks could certainly use some help. |

This is a sad incident and i know about the conditions of the barracks from when i visited relatives in the military @ Bragg. It is sad that we forget to update infrastructure across the board in America and let those who protect our freedoms directly live in squalor but maybe now we can get to it and fix them up...at least for a few months till the heat dies... I just think of what we let happen to the outpatient building of Walter Reed and what used to happen in the VA hospital my mom worked in during her nursing days.... one case involved a paraplegic in a bed and a rat with the munchies. you figure it out.
and to get back to the defense contracting, lets not be too hard on them. my earlier days on PO were financed by a defense contract and i would like to get back into that work... just need to work out a miracle or something like it to get back enough freedom for a secuity clearance again. |
