The gaming market just isn't in PCs any more, unless they're MMOs. I've been bitter about that ever since the adventure game basically up and vanished. |

I dont really care about PC gaming because I think that the input scheme (KB & Mouse) sucks for everything except perhaps FPS, but I do have an undying HATE for EA. They are the Wal-Mart of videogames and have totally lost their ability to bring original content to any form of media. Perhaps calling them the Wal-Mart of videogames isn't right, they are the CHINA of videogames, and they suck. |

I'd say the future of PC games is more in the indie and freeware scene anyway, have you seen some of the things coming from there? The most obvious one is probably Trackmania, I spent the entire weekend playing the free TrackMania Nations Forever, then went into town today to buy TrackMania United based purely on what the free version was offering.
Also, digital distribution looks like it will be bigger and better on PC, just look at Steam and quite frankly I don't know anyone who buys sports games on PC (aside from the Football Manager series which has a huge following over here, but you don't play football/soccer in that, your the coach/manager and basically pick the team and tactics, its like an interactive spreadsheet).
Also, EA used to suck, they've improved alot this generation, you only have to look at the quality of SKATE, FIFA 08 and UEFA Euro 2008 to see that, also, do you really think Bioware would of joined their ranks of studio's if they didn't have faith in them? From everything I've read EA have stopped being the big old interfering publisher they used to be and are now using their cash to let developers have more freedom in their work that they wouldn't of done elsewhere and all this has come about because of the need to lose their negative image and because of the likes of Activision and Ubisoft catching them up as strong publishers (although EA have no distanced themselves from those two by changing their business practices). |

Eh, I'm not on one side of the fence or the other. Sports games aren't really my thing, but I don't ever remember there being a big PC following. In EA's defense, I <3 Theme Park for the Genesis. I also dig the Fight Night series. there monopoly on the sports genre as far as buying up all of the official names for use in there video games only, all that did was give BLITZ: The League a cooler storyline (imho). So to this bit of news I say "eh."

Well my take on it is that EA is a business, cut and dried. Virtually everything they do, whether you like them or not now, you'd probably do if you controlled a company. Their stockholders are possibly the happiest on the planet. Also, as much as anyone bitches about their sports games (and I gave up on Madden with Madden 2000) about them being simply roster updates, they keep selling. madden is the king of the roost but all of their games sell bucketloads. If Madden was selling on the PC (where piracy runs rampant) then I am ultra sure they would continue to publish it.
As far as a consumer, the last EA Sports game I bought was...was...I can't even remember. The only EA games I buy now are really from the houses they eat up (Burnout comes to mind). I remember when EA used to crank out original games that were killer (Adventure Construction Set, M.U.L.E., The Bard's Tale, Dragon Wars, etc) back on the Commodore 64 (add in Epyx and Activision and The Bitmap Bros too) and even into the early Genesis years but those days are done. Yeah, we'll get something like Boogie out of them but that's clearly a rip off/modification of an existing competitive franchise ala SKATE and then you have stuff like Facebreaker which is just an in-house demo of their own game (Fight Night) that they decided to flesh out to make money off of.
On the whole I don't love EA but I simply vote with my pocket. If "we" (meaning consumers) didn't buy EA games they wouldn't be around to put them out. |

To call SKATE a Rip Off/modification of an already existing franchise is ridiculous, its like saying the same about Gran Turismo and Ridge Racer... |

Sports games in general are just a ploy to get repeat business every year anyway. |

I wouldn't use the word "ploy" but it is the business model to simply update names/numbers and rerelease the product at full market value. Now I know I may be exagerating a little bit but I can't see why something like Madden couldn't come out at maybe $50 or $45 on every other year. It's not like the game goes thru an entire overhaul with each edition. It'd just be hard to sell to the public when you're jumping the price up and down each year. Also seeing as how most EA games are $10 or more higher than other games it clearly is an EA thing. Their programmers aren't THAT much better and their products certainly aren't THAT much better than any other other on the whole.
But this could turn into a really long thread so I'll stop. |

I understand what you're saying about a business model. I just used the word "ploy" because, while I'm not a very big video game fan to begin with, I particularly hate sports games. Just me being a grumpy bastard I guess.
But back to it being a business model...if I were in EA's position, I'd probably be doing the same thing. In the world of money, you can't argue with near guaranteed repeat business. |
