-If I need to go in the middle of a conversation, don't openly express disappointment like I had told you your mother just died.

-If I don't respond within 5 seconds, I just might not be at the computer, or I might be working on something more important. Consider this before you start spamming me with animated smilies in a futile attempt to get my attention.

-If you say "im bored", I will instantly close the window. I am not your personal entertainer.

-If you know I've blocked you, then it means you tried to reach me in a shady manner. If you tried to reach me in a shady manner, then you know why I've blocked you.

-Circumventing a block will accomplish nothing aside from me blocking you again on sight.

-"y did u blok me" is not a valid question.

-If I can't decipher what you mean through your endless stream of spelling errors, I will close the window and not bother to reply, unless I wanna be an asshole to you.

-If you mistake my automatic away message for a live response, I can safely assume you are suffering from mental retardation. "I am away from my computer right now" at 2:00 in the morning is not a genuine attempt to laugh at your face.

-If my nick contains "@work" then I really am at fucking work. Saying "Really?" will not distract me for my job and will inch you closer to the blacklist for your inane question.

-If I signed on as invisible and you go "cum on nser me i no ur onlien", then there is nothing separating you from a stalker.

-If your conversation subjects amounts to nothing more than "hello" and "sup", mine to you will be limited to pure silence.

At this juncture I feel it is necessary to point out the obvious to those here but the rest of the Internet needs to know: Most IM services have spell-check SOMEWHERE on the service for your posts.

I think I've only got one other thing on my own list...maybe 2.

I never expect someone's undivided attention via IM but If we're engaged in a real discussion, don't wander off or start doing something else that makes a 10+ minute gap between your responses.

And to go along with this one...if you've got something else to do, say so and don't just wander off.

Mine may be a little funky for some, but I don't use IM as much as I used to, except for work and it just ticks me off when I'm talking to one of my coworkers about something important and they just wander off to lunch or get preoccupied with something else when I'm asking them something important.

Yeah, sometimes peoples things anoy me. I'm usually only on aim while at work and people get mad if I don't respond to them right away. But, I'm sure i've spelled stuff wrong, sent random (choo choo) messages and the like to people and hope i'm not getting blocked because of it. Neutral

The thing annoys me the most about people and Ims is when i am on and somebody pops up says that the need to chat about something important, ask the question ( taking great length to do so.) and then log off. Now I don"t mind this some times a wireless connection is lost or a battery goes dead, and it's fine, but when they log off and then don't make any effort to get back to me for days and when they do it's for small talk or for a different topic etc. it just really ticks me off.
